OK guys I took the challenge & went to Wal-Mart to do my grocery shopping today. I have to admit my bill was about 20.00 less than at Publix. I hate hate hate Wal-Mart but for that kind of savings I am going to have to learn to love it. I think my biggest challenge now is trying to find a good time to shop as it is always so crowded.

I love Walmart, I feel like I live in walmart. Just can't beat their prices.... usually. Just had a prescription called in that cost me 5 more there than Target. Same with produce.... not always cheaper than Publix. These guys sure do keep us on our toes to find the best price.
I've never figured how much I save there, but that 20/week is a great deal and sure makes a big difference saving for Disney.

Hey Walmart price matches competitors prices. No need to shop somewhere else to get lower produce prices, just let them know at the checkstands. If they give you any problem ask to speak to a Customer Service Manager. I know because I work as a Customer Service Manager at a brand new Super Center out here in Woodburn Oregon. We keep copies of all competitors ads and we do price matches every single day. As for the pharmacy I don't know if they price match or not, but all other areas of the store will.

That's great to know, thanks Linnie. I've done that at Yous R Us before and it's quite easy.

I don't grocery shop at Walmart because we have no Super Centers here. However, I did go in FL with Val. The prices were good, but they didn't carry everything we wanted. At first we thought maybe it was FL that didn't carry particular brands, but found them at other stores.
Also their american cheese was awful - I don't remember the brand. Even the guy slicing it didn't like it because it didn't slice good at all. He said they used to carry a different brand but switched. Maybe they'll switch back to something better if no one buys it...or maybe they already did.
Whenever I go shopping I always go to the closest store with a flyer from another store to do the price matching. However, I never thought of Walmart doing it for the food. Our grocery stores don't do it - I've asked, but maybe they will if we ever get a local Super Walmart to compete with.

All of our Grocery stores around here match each others prices as long as you bring in the cutout from the other add. They also souble all coupons up to $1.00. The only sticky point is groceries will only match grocery adds- not Target, Walmart (even super stores) or Pharmacy adds.

When I used to live in Findlay OH, we had a super Walmart. I loved to shop there for everything, but my produce and meat. Whenever I bought produce there, we didn't like it. It was never fresh and never seemed to last. I always found the meat better at Meijer, price and taste. You couldn't beat the prices at Walmart for everything else though!!!

Oh I wish disneylover, it is more like 1000.00 a year with 2 weeks off for vacation. I am hoping to put some towards Disney but unfortunately finacial reasons must make me save money somewhere. Everything keeps going up but my company is cutting our salaries. Go figure!

As a true Budgeteer this one will keep me up at nights.....
We are getting a SuperWalMart added on to our little store next year - the grocery part is coming. I have a son who works for Kroger's and I just love the new store they built. I know and enjoy the people and appreciate the service they give. They just instituted some cost cutting and super-service changes in anticipation of the WalMart upgrade. The cost cutting involved more work for fewer people. I will probably look for the 'super' bargains as I do at Sam's Club, but I will also try to be loyal regular shopper at Kroger's.
I know WalMart has many great things to offer - low prices being the key....but they also offer low wages to many employees. I guess this is one of those conundrums we each have to figure out for ourselves: how to save as much as possible without compromising our values, such as more and more money being sent to other countries and their workers and not enough support for our own at home. :confused2:

SuperWalmart shopping...to avoid the longs lines, I usually shop late night (usually after 11pm) or early morning (before 10am)....and that is at the one on 192 that everyone goes too. But I have found that it usually holds true for most of the store...actually any store that has late night, early morning, or 24 hour service.
Nancy, does the walmart where you are not pay well. I know the Walmarts around here pay as much as, if not more than many of the other retail store, which granted is still not a great pay for the entry level jobs, but of course, they don't have a lock on the area like Walmarts do in some places...the theme parks pretty much set the going wage here.
7.00 per hour to start at our local supercenter in a small Ga town

I know I have said it in another Budget post, but I swear by my Super-Walmart for groceries. Since switching from Hannaford, I save about $25/wk. It is true that they do not carry everything - I still have to purchase my cereal (they stopped carrying Product 19) and meat at Hannaford. Other than that, I can usually find most everything we need at a pretty big savings.

Kylara 11p-10a are of course hours I can not go to Wal-Mart since I am going back to work tomorrow. I know I will not get to Wal-Mart every week but will just have to make an effort to get there at least once or twice a month. I ended up going to Publix on Friday & really paid attention to what I bought & ended up saving at Publix too. I guess I need to stick to my list & use coupons.
Belle you were the one who finally made me take the Wal-Mart challenge.
