Yo guys:

This is my first trip driving FROM PA to DW (used to going from NY).

So far, the course I've come up with is the same as what AAA came up with but I think there might be an easier way to avoid the D.C. area.

Any suggestions: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Leaving from PA on Rt. 81 south, to 70 to 270 around D.C. and then pick up 95 and head south from there.

Who drives down from up here that has a way to avoid D.C.? I don't think I'll have that much of a problem as I'm leaving on a Saturday at about 4:00 a.m. (if DH can get himself out of bed to the car before I'm pulling out ). I'm pretty sure I can sail by but I've heard there's a lot of construction around the Beltway and I don't know when it's due to be finished. :(

Claire, take it from me as a Baltimore native who knows the traffic around DC and the I-70/I-270 corridor: Stay on I-95 the whole way!

I-270 north of DC is every bit as bad as the Capitol Beltway (I-495) during rush hours, and is just as dangerous and confusing.

The best way to avoid the DC traffic is to drive at night. If you can drive overnight, or leave early enough in the morning to get past DC before 6am, you'll have no problem.

When I drive from Baltimore, I always leave at about 4am, which puts me well past DC and even past Richmond before the heaviest part of the morning rush. I know you live a bit farther north than me, so you might have to leave at 3am or even 2am, but there is nothing like knowing that you're 1/3 of the way there before the sun even comes up!

Well, except actually getting there when the sun comes up, but you have to drive overnight for that.

Thanks Wil:

I used to leave home about midnight to start trips but with DH it's hard (only married 10 years even though we're old fa*ts). He's not one to look at long rides as an exciting journey as I do. I do all the driving anyhow so I plan the route the way I like it.

We are only about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Dulles Airport (we took 70 to 15 to the toll road to Dulles Airport road and it was a breeze both times -Sat. afternoon one trip and 3:00 a.m. another trip). Also just visited my boyfriend and his wife (long story) and they live in Fairfax and we made that in about the same time.

We should be leaving here for DW about 4:00 a.m. which will get me near D.C. by about 5:45 ish (if DH doesn't complain about my "lead foot"!). It will be a Saturday morning so not much commuter traffic like the weekday.

If I had my druthers (whatever they are) I would leave about midnight as I definitely won't be sleeping anyhow knowing I have one sleep before arriving at DW. Then we could stop early Sat. night and get an early start on Sunday and be at DW early!!!!.
Thanks.
