View Full Version : Rental of DVC Vacation Club Points

As the site grows, it becomes necessary to establish a few rules about posting DVC points for rent.

I have no real desire for this room to become a 'rental' room but I have no problem with the occasional active site member trying to rent their points.

So - a few ground rules for all concerned! :)

A member must have at least 50 posts (not just playing a game 50 times, but REAL posts) before listing a rental. Anyone renting will want to know the renter a little bit before doing a transaction of this sort. Depending on the situation, I may slightly bend this rule if the renter of points contacts me first.
All rental transactions are COMPLETELY between the renter and the rentee. The site takes absolutely NO responsibility for the transaction, and any issues arising from the transaction will need to be worked out between the two parties themselves.

Thats it for now. If situations arise that require additions/modifications to this policy, I will post an update notice.

Thanks!

Sounds like a very reasonable policy Dave.

IMO, folks have been comfortable with the occassional rental in the past, simply for the reason you stated, they are familiar with each other. It's like two friend's helping each other out, to both their mutual benefit.

I never have any points to spare, my kids get it all. So I won't be the "renter" but I would be tempted to "rent” points from someone, special when MF rolls around. I know DH would want to investigate someone before renting points from them. Oh Dave, I hope this doesn't become troublesome for you. If it does, just send them to another website. We don’t want to take advantage of you, not ever.

I don't know, Dave. But I love this site and don't want to to become a site for rental by any means.

I am a DVC owner and pretty much use my points for my family. I didn't buy into DVC to make money or live off of it.

There is another site for DVC rentals and I think it should stay there.

I think we should keep our site without a rental place.

If it is done within our community, it should be done with PM or e-mail between the two and not on this site.

If I am out of line, I apologize. But this is my own opinion.

I believe what Dave is saying he's not keen on this becoming a 'rental site' either.

There have been a few times, when a member has had some extra points to rent, and have asked if anyone in the community wants them before going elsewhere. I don't see that as really being any different from a member having an extra meal voucher and asking if anyone would like it. It's sort of 'good neighborly' to offer it to friends first.

yea, Robin - guess that is what I was saying also. Trying to be nice about it, I didn't mean to repeat anything. Guess I missed the posts that referred to DVC previously. Good thing Dave is on top of everything.

That's okay, Kay. Just me getting the last word in. ;)
I also didn't want those regulars who have on occassion offered up their points to feel the post was 'about them'.

That is absolutely right indeed. Thanks, Robin

Nope, I don't mind occasional rentals between active members of the site. As we get new members, I just want them to post for a while, and both get to know our members, and we'll get to know them. I think its great when people get a chance to rent points from someone they 'know'.

The DIS has a very active rental board specifically for DVC. For those wishing to purely rent points I'd highly suggest that board. There is a great 'stickey' that gives lots of good info for both renter and rentee.

That's great Dave. :)

We plan on always using our points, but it is nice to know that once in a while if my friends here at Tagrel would like ones we can't use I can let them know about it before I post them on a rental-focussed board. :)

Sounds like a good plan for now and as always, we can wait and see what happens. This is a terrific community so I don't imagine that we will have anything to be concerned over. ;)

As Dave has already said, that's exactly right. As you stated Robin, I was a member that had some points to rent and much preferred to rent them to someone here that I "knew" and that "knew" me. I think Dave's rules are more than fair.

Prior to my posting the availability of the points I did what I thought was the right thing to do. I asked Dave if he minded. If he had said no, I would have understood. Being the gracious man that he is, he didn't. I posted the availability and got some nibbles. I did the same thing @ k&b's site where I'm also active. I knew that I could post on the disboard but felt more comfortable dealing with people here & k&b's. Thankfully I was able to rent all of the points that I had and the family that rented them spent 4 wonderful nights at VWL in a 2 BR.

Information only

any DVC member can Transfer points to another DVC member .

this is done by DVC
use your membership numbers
so your membership # code is like a credit card.

If I have any DVC Point to give I would like know the person and use the PM or email to do the deal.

I like treat my DVC membership number like gold.

I just had over 200 points transferred into my account and it was probably the 5th or 6th time I have done this over the past 3 years. Each time went very smoothly. Both of us have been on the phone with DVC and they don't care how it was arranged or who pays or why. they just do the transfer for the parties. The person that is doing the transfer can only do it once in their calendar year. The person receiving the points can receive it as many times possible.

Dave,

Great policy. The biggest fear for most is a trust issue and I think the 50 post is a nice "get to know you" prerequisite.

All the best,
Shontell

I'm a DVC member (OKW) and I needed to find info. on where to look for people renting out points (friends are coming next year and we may need extra points).

I haven't been around the boards for quite some time since we are skipping a 2006 trip to WDW (so sad.......)

Anyway....thanks to all for posting here and directing me over to the DIS board. Whenever I need Disney info. I know where to come. I think I should hang around here more, it always makes my heart happy to talk (or at least read) Disney!

Actually, the above 'rules' have not be correct for over a year.

The DVC's current rules for transfers are:

Per Master Contract (affects all sub-contracts) Per Use Year, points may be transferred in one direction only (in or out) but as many times as you like.

Also previously Banked, Borrowed or Transferred points may not be transferred.

Also transferred points may be Banked, but not Borrowed.

Finally, Holding Points (that have not been previously Banked, Borrowed or Transferred) may be transferred, BUT they do retain their holding status.

I don't know the DVC Lingo - so I'm not too sure what Tony said : (
May I still rent points from someone? I'm hoping to do that when I head to WDW next trip : )

Thanks - Shell

Does anyone have any ideas about websites I can check out to learn about renting points? I'm thinking about (but not positive yet) renting points for Marathon weekend 2010

Do you want information on how it works or just looking at who to rent from? I have rented from Daddio, Roodad & Kathleena. All without a hitch. I posted that I wanted points & these 3 were able to help so I have stayed DVC 3 times now. By looking at the information Dave has on the site I knew exactly how many points I needed & then knew what the cost would be when the cost of points was quoted to me.

Right now I'm more intrested in what and how to do it. We haven't nailed down our day at Disney yet. Do you have to pay to park at a DVC resort?

Ursulinda
04-09-2009, 05:34 AM
Actually, you don't pay to self-park right now at any Disney resort, only to valet park. If your key to the world card says "DVC member" on it, you can even valet free (tip still needed) at DVC resorts.

As a very good resource for learning ALL about DVC Rentals I would suggest the DIS DVC Rental Board as well. They have stickies that provide great advice when doing a DVC rental and are a must to read to fully understand how a rental works.

There is a lot of trust that is needed for both parties, and its important to do your homework before sending a 'stranger' cash for a room! It is NOT the same as booking a room with Disney, and Disney will NOT get involved in any problems that arise from the rental.

Don't get me wrong - I've rented points and I'll do it again if needed. But understanding how it works is very important. For those renting points, trusting your renter is also very important. Even renting your points requires trust because as the owner you are responsible for any damage/charges the renter racks up. This is when its great to find someone you 'know' (like MJ's great examples) that have available points.

If that isn't possible, I would HIGHLY recommend finding someone you can 'check into' a bit. Asking for referals is a good idea. If they are a DIS member then you could search out their posts and get a feel for their personality before you rent. Getting direct and confirmed contact information is also very important.

Good Luck!

So your saying that I can put an ad here to rent my points out. Take the renters money and then cancel the reservation on them and Disney will not get involved? HHmmmmmm.....work has been kinda slow lately.

I got points to rent! I only accept cash! PM me!

Thanks Dennis! This is a PERFECT example of checking out a poster and seeing if they are reliable and trustworthy. You just saved LOTS of people from heartache and loss of money. What a guy!

(Run, renters RUN!!!!!!!!!!! :yikes: )

And congrates Dennis on REALLY reducing your chances of EVER renting your points!)

Argh! I thought I had successfully banked some points on line this winter, but in making a ressie I discovered that I have 128 points that must be used by August 1st. Sooooo, if you can use 128 points before August 1, send me a PM. As you are probably aware, however, at this late date a ressie may be hard to come by. This is a fire sale, so the points are available for $8 per.

Boy do I wish I could take advantage of your generous offer. We've committed to doing some home renovations so our finances are tied up. We're taking down the wall between the dining room and kitchen, putting in a granite countertop, crown molding and new flooring thoughout the whole first floor.

Oh man Sid  I had to "rent" extra points from Disney to round out my trip when my dates changes somewhat last minute... You sure would have been a lot cheaper than the $15/pt they charged me!!! *sigh*
