View Full Version : Taking The Redeye
Suzy Q has us taking the 'redeye' for our spring trip. I think it's a great idea. We can have a full day of relaxing activities like floating down the lazy river. Here is my question...Does anyone have any tips on getting the most sleep on a five hour flight? :?

Pick up some ear plugs at the drug store. 33 decibels is the highest I recall seeing. It'll drown out the humming sound of the engine and crying infants.

I have been from Seattle to Orlando four times and three were the red eye.
The first time we had a connecting flight in Chicago with a 2 hour sit and wait. That was by far the worst trip for me. I ended up watching the movie because I couldnt sleep at all. The next day I was a zombie and we ended up sleeping once we got checked inot our house we rented.
The second time was a connecting flight too but less lay over and I cant remmeber where either. Again I barely slept at all so I watched the movie and the next day was a zombie. we couldnt get checked into the beach club until something like 3 pm so We tried to go to Epcot to do some of world show case. As long as we stayed away from movies we did ok. We also swam for a while and that helped more than anything. Once we got our roomw e slept for about 3 hours, missed our dinner reservation but felt much better for late night.
The third time we did a stright through on Alaska Airlines. I felt so much better because I could get short naps. I think it was worring about switching flights that kept me from sleeping. I did watch the movie but it ended well before the flight was over (5 hours) and I fell asleep maybe 3 hours that night. We got to Orlando about 7am and went to Portifino first and Universal attractions and we did well not needing a nap or anything.
The last time i went was a stright through 5 hour on Alaska but day time. I have to say I wouldnt mind the red eye straight through again. Sleep made 5 hours go much faster than day time awake. Its a really long flight anyway you look at it. I liked Red eye straight through the best. I like to watch the movie then I fall asleep. If its a good one Ill watch the whole thing if its a bad one I fall asleep while ni. (We generally bring our own ear plugs and I listen to the radio or TC if its on. The movie almost always includes a sitcome or two too.)
I also find it helps to grab a pillow and blanket or carry something to use. They defintly dont have enough for everyone either so grab one fast when you get aboard.

Mmmmh, my suggestion would be nyquil (sp?) or Tylenom PM - Just a light med that helps me sleep and keeps my air passages clear. ;)
