No www anymore?

Yesterday during a group of us chit-chatting, someone said that you don't have to type in "www" anymore to access a website. I was flabbergasted and thought they'd lost it. Well, today, I've tried many sites without typing in the "www" and I get to the site just like always.

Am I the only person who didn't know this?

When did this change? How come so few know about it? Anybody have any info on this change?

I believe when this changed depends on the browser. They pretty much search for both the site with and without www when you put in a URL and voila!
