Hey all, need some techy info here?????
I am scanning a lot of home pictures and would like to know the best format to save them in....
Bitmap .bmp
JPEG .jpg
TIFF .tif
Flashpix .fpx
Those are my options... I am using HP PhotoSmart. Also, do you prefer any other program to do this with????
Thanks!

jpg is the way to go for typical scanned in photographic images. It does a great job of compressing the files - keeping the file size reasonable and also maintaining very good quality. (most programs let you set the desired quality level - higher the quality the larger the file)
The other formats you mentioned will work, but the file sizes will be HUGE compared to jpg for most scanned photos.

I save all my photos in JPG format, unless I'm going to be doing some heavy-duty manipulation to them, in which case I save then as TIFs.
For my photo work I like using Corel PhotoPaint, which is the image editor that is part of the Corel Draw graphics suite. It's pretty capable; I can do pretty much anything that I could do with Adobe Photoshop (the best professional image editing program on the market), but PhotoPaint is a lot easier to use.
For simple scanning, saving, and printing, and maybe some occasional red-eye removal, PhotoSmart should be fine for you if you already know how to use it. You could also try Adobe Photoshop LE, which is cheap and fairly easy to use, but very powerful. Or you could try a program called Paint Shop Pro, which has been around for at least ten years and was specially designed to be easy to learn and use for novices.

I have Adopbe PhotoDelux, and it will not allow me to save the pics in different formats, I have found the HP program nice and easy, however I will try and get my hands on the LE program cause the photosmart will not allow good editing of the photos such as removing smudges etc.
Thanks
