Since Figgy made need to get ice or find another way to keep her insulin cold, I figured I'd start a thread with resources she can go to or contact, if it takes a while for the power to come back on.
This first one is a list of distribution centers in Martin County where ice can be gotten if she can't get it from a local store.
Distribution centers
Five distribution centers are being established in Martin County where residents can obtain water and ice. Officials add that it may take several hours or days before the sites are fully operational. The sites are:
· Home Depot Shopping Center, 3100 S.E. Federal Highway, Stuart.
· Thriftway of Indiantown, Warfield Boulevard, Indiantown.
· Publix Shopping Center, Bridge Road and U.S. 1, Hobe Sound.
· Treasure Coast Square Mall, Jensen Beach.
· Martin Memorial Health Services at Martin Downs village Center, Palm City.

I agree! What a great idea, Robin. Maybe Figgy could contact her police or fire department for help. Because Dick is ill and she doesn't drive much maybe they could get some dry ice to her.

she shure as heck can't read here, I've got her computer in the backseat of my truck!!!
I am going to try to stop by their house again tomorrow, to help get the panels down and if possible, I will drop off some ice--I've got an icemaker here at work, but it is getting alot of use lately, as you can imagine. I will be working all night tonite (Laura is going to bring the kids and stay the night since I've got TV, A/C and a computer connection) and will try to stockpile some extra ice. I've also got dibbs on a 5000 watt generator as soon as they show up in our local BJ's store--Laura's mom works there and is going to put a tag on one as soon as they get them!!!

If anyone deserves the generator you do. Remember, good thing happen to good people.
It will be a fun sleepover for your little ones. Almost all the comforts of home.

Here's a good site on Florida's Emergency management:
http://www.floridadisaster.org/
I'm not sure if either of these agencies can help.
State of Florida Emergency Information 24-hour hotline (FEIL): 1-800-342-3557
Elder Affairs: 1-800-96-ELDER (1-800-963-5337)

I know she can't read here...silly goose.
Even with her cell phone, she probably couldn't stay on long either. I was thinking Lou-Ann might have their address, and be able to either get the information for them or relay the information to the proper agency.

FEMA is currently setting up an mobile emergency room in our parking lot--VERY COOL. In two hours, they set up a fully operational triage and treatment center. Our north facility is almost completely devastated--being a much older and larger building right on the water, it didn't withstand the storm well. All the patients were transferred down here.

With Ivan heading north fairly quickly, does it pay to take 'all' the shutters down just yet?
BTW, how did your house hold up? Do you need to reshingle?

Can't someone who has Figgy's address contact the Red Cross about getting some ice/a cooler/loan her a generator etc. so she can keep her insulin cold for her. I'm sure once the Red Cross knows the situation with Dick just out of the hospital and Figgy needing insulin, they would put her on one of their priority lists.
Since she has no power and can't use the cell phone, she has to rely on others coming to her. Does she have any neighbors who might have a generator or way to keep her insulin cool?
Can Figgy and Dick be allowed at the hospital so Dick can be monitored (and his cuminin level and her insulin stored?). I guess there are plenty of people there already injured from the storm and I just remembered she won't leave her pets.

(and again, we all can't say it enough, you are "da man" this week Ronski!)
P.S. Maybe with Ivan on it's way, all the boards shouldn't be taken down so soon.

I hope Figgy has a car phone adapter for her cell phone.

Thanks so much, Robin and everyone for your help. She does have an adapter but was going to be careful on running the car due to the gas shortage. She does have a neighbor who is a retired paramedic who is checking in and who has 2 20 yr old sons as well. I am sure one of them will try to help if needed. She is very grateful to Ron and to everyone for their thoughts and prayers and dust. I know she will be moved to tears when she is able to read all you have written for them. I shall write down the resources and try to get them to her. thanks guys.....

Figgy's phone is back. She called that Ronski brought them some shaved ice which should get them through the day. She was sure glad to see him. Guess it is so hot with no air moving in the house that Dick slept in the driveway. He woke up with bugs all over him. She has now found the mosquito repellant.......They are cooking with their barbeque and washing with pool water.........You have to do what you have to do.....They are praying for power soon.......

I wonder if they can find mosquito netting? They should probably boil any water they are getting from the pool, even for washing.

My heart sure does go out to Figgy and Dick. I spent a good portion of the day whining about how hard my life is. How unreasonably difficult one of my finals was, and that Tyler had to go home early from daycare because of an unexplained fever, etc, etc. My problems seem so trivial now that I hear what they are going through.
Hugs,
Carrie

Louann, I don't think she needs to actually run the car to charge her cell phone, she just needs to turn the key enough to get the electrical stuff on. You know what I mean right, most ignitions have 2 or 3 stages, she definitely does not want to waste her gas. If she does this she just needs to make sure that she does not leave it on idefinitely or run any other items in the car that could drain her battery.

I spoke to Ron on the phone earlier. He's going over tomorrow (I think) to talk down the boards on the windows so they'll get some light and fresh air.
He sounded in great spirits, and it was sure good to hear his voice. He said at 7pm at night, it was still about 80 degrees, humid and no breeze. They have water, but haven't had electricity for 5 days.
Can you say cold shower? I knew you could....
Ronski

If anyone tells you that taking a cold shower is invigorating, they LIE!!!! Still don't have power this morning at home, Laura and the kids went to her moms house a few miles away (they do have power) while I stayed home with the dogs. Made the mistake of cooking burgers on the grill last night--filled the house with smoke, now everything is damp, warm and smells like cooked hamburger. Did I ever tell you how much I like Florida? Ice is worth more than gold right now, you can trade it for anything--I heard that the local prostitutes are taking payment in ice J/K!!! :woot: Laura's mom was able to get a generator today, but I've got no way to use it until I get some gasoline. It will make things easier the next time tho. All, in all, we are OK, many are much worse off, so please join me and direct your prayers to those who really need them. :angelPray:

I certainly will Ronski. It's good to hear from you. You're always welcome to come up here to Buffalo, where we have plenty of ice (and in a few weeks probably snow)

Good morning,
Dick was able to get the fridge for the trailor running so they can at least keep a bit of their thawed food a few more days. They can only use the cel rarely as when everyone is awake the towers are overloaded. Figgy says if she can just get a little breeze going through the house she thinks she can make it. I cannot imagine no circulating air for 5 days and no light. I warned her about that pool water but she says they have it chlorinated well...........She says it is so frustrating to know the utility trucks are rolling by them to get to Miami........Continue to pray for them..They are not out of the woods. Dick is running out of things he can drink as he cannot have caffein. They need water as well........Thanks for all the good wishes......
Ronski

trucks are NOT rolling by us to get to Miami. resources are allotted based on need. currently martin county has 61,000 w/o power. palmbeach county, directly to our south has (or had as of yesterday) 400,000 w/o power. over 6000 utility trucks from other states were waiting at the state line for the storm to pass before heading down. these things take time. residential areas have less priority than commercial and essential services areas like hospitals, water treatment etc... personally, I'd be willing to give up another days power just to get these gas stations back up and running.

I would agree 100 percent. I may have misunderstood her or she may have misunderstood what she heard. It must be awful to be living like a mushroom (in a dark and wet place) and not always get the whole picture. I am sure 4 or five days without power must seem like 4 weeks or at least it would to me. I am certain that all is being done as quickly as it can be and that they are in fact prioritizing their efforts much like a triage would. That is what I told her. Patience is a short commodity at times and sometimes we fail to see the whole picture. Thanks for clearing this up. My hat is off to you and all those who are helping to keep the communities running as best as they can........God Bless You, Ron......

It's sooo good to hear that things are at least improving some down in Florida. Thanks for checking in Ronski and thanks Lou-Ann for telling us about Figgy.
When I lived on Long Island NY, we used to get every hurricane and storm that came up the east coast (if it didn't hit the Carolina's first) and they hit us directly.(Long Island juts out into the water in the Atlantic and seems to be a target for hurricanes). After my divorce, the kids and I lived on 2 wooded acres by ourselves. During hurricanes, I tried to make a game out of the fact that we had no TV (their first priority at their age then) and no refrigerator and no lights etc. Luckily, I had a great Vermont Wood stove in the livingroom with a griddle top. I was able to take my canned tomatoes and cook Italian sauce on it and boil water for macaroni. I also cooked up the stew meat before it was totally thawed and used canned veggies in it to make stew. We also boiled water on top of the stsove to use in the sinks in the kitchen and bath for washing dishes, doing laundry and taking sponge baths. (The stove also came in handy when it got cooler out and it was enough to heat the entire house). We pretended we were camping out. Our most fun was sitting by the picture window and watching the trees blow down in the hurricane wind!! (big 100' 80 year old oak trees). We used one kerosene lamp (with the windows opened) to see at the table when we ate or played board games. We all had a flashlight each for the bedrooms and a hurricane candle in the bathrooms.
I realize it's much worse in Florida with the types of homes they have and with the flooding which we didn't have but sometimes it helps with smaller kids to make the most of it (unless you're ill or injured - that's a different story).
