It's getting harder and harder to get Disney Dollars to save for vacation. So I sent the email below to Guest Relations in the hopes that a substitute could be created.

If you agree with me, maybe you can send a copy of the same email to WDW and maybe they will listen to us.

Send to: guest.mail@wdw.disneyonline.com

With Disney Stores all over the United States closing every month, it is getting more and more difficult for people like me to obtain Disney Dollars.

Disney Dollars are used by a huge number of people who are planning vacations to the various Disney resorts as a method of savings. The typical pattern is to make a pilgrimage to the local Disney Store each payday to purchase Disney Dollars, then put the $DD aside until the trip. When the trip begins, Guests use the $DD for everything from food and souvenirs to paying their Disney resort room bill. The Walt Disney Company benefits greatly from this practice because it receives the Guests' monies well in advance of the actual trip.

But since it is getting so difficult to obtain $DD, this practice may die out. Many, many people with whom I have spoken are becoming disappointed and even a little angry that there is no provision for purchasing $DD on-line or through mail-order.

Further, for those who still do have access to Disney Stores, it has always been a bone of contention that gift cards issued by Disney Stores cannot be used at Disney parks and resorts, and that Disney parks and resorts have no rechargeable gift cards of their own. When saving for a trip, the fact that $DD come in a maximum denomination of $10 makes carrying large amounts over a few hundred dollars difficult and inconvenient, not to mention the fact that if a stack of $DD goes missing they cannot be cancelled from the Disney computer system and re-issued as Disney park passes can be.

The consensus among frequent, loyal Guests to the Disney resorts is that the Walt Disney Company should begin selling rechargeable gift cards on-line and by phone order. The cards should each have unique serial numbers, just as Disney park passes have, so that they can be cancelled out and re-issued if lost. The minimum initial purchase should be a reasonably small amount such as $5 or $10; adding money to the card should done in an equally reasonable small amount, and there should be no fees of any kind associated with the purchase or recharging of these cards, just like the gift cards currently available in Disney Stores. But unlike those Disney Store gift cards, the new cards should be universally accepted at any Disney Store, park, or resort, just as Disney Dollars currently are.

Certainly, creating a new type of rechargeable, universally-accepted Disney gift card will necessitate some initial investment by the Walt Disney Company, but the financial benefits of having hundreds of thousands of future Guests all over the world sending money into Disney's coffers every week in preparation for trips that may be months away will more than offset this investment, especially considering the revenues that are currently being lost as Disney Stores close and people lose any access to Disney Dollars.

I absolutely love the idea of a rechargeable gift card. That would make saving for vacations so much easier. I would definitely add $50.00 a pay to save up for my trips.Sure hope they hear the voice of the people on this one. My email is on the way. I would also purchase them for family members and add to it until we can all go!!!

Will, I think this a great idea and I will definitely send an e-mail down to WDW. What a great way to save for a trip, I wouldn't be stressing out on the money were spending while were down there if I had a gift card all ready to use!!!

Great idea Will. I REALLY liked using my Visa Rewards card this year, so a card like that you could 'recharge' like a gift card would be great. And since they are all set up for the Rewards cards, it shouldn't be difficult to implement either!

Has anyone here ever used Webcertificate? I used to use them, you could recharge those & also use it as a charge card. That would be nice for people who can't for some reason get the VISA. Like a pre-paid charge card. Then you could use it for your deposits too when you book ressies.

I love the Disney Dollars, though. I just wish you could order them online. Wouldn't people pay for insurance in case they get lost? I would. I can't imagine why else they wouldn't offer it.

Someone from Florida's going to have a lucrative business peddling Disney Dollars via mail if Disney doesn't do something once all the stores close.

Are they planning on closing all the stores? The stores in our malls here in Metro Detroit are still open.

I dont think Disney knows what they are going to do with the Disney Stores. They have been closing like crazy all over the country for a couple of years now, because most of them have a lousy selection of merchandise and are rediculously overpriced, so they haven't been selling much. On the other hand, a few TDS in my area have improved thier selection and prices in the last 12-18 months and are picking up more and more business.

There was a rumor recently that Children's Palace was looking at buying the Disney Stores from Disney, which might save some of them, but nobody really knows what's going to happen.

I sure would love to see pins come back to the Disney Stores! That's a guaranteed purchase for me every trip because I know I don't have tospend more than $10.00 to get one and then if I decide I don't like it later I can use it to trade!

I agree, I would love to see pins come back to the Disney Store. It's nice to buy them ahead of time so the kids have different ones to choose from to trade when we get down to WDW. I sent my e-mail yesterday and received my automated response from guest services thanking me for my e-mail and that they would respond shortly.

Most of the grocery stores here now have a rack full of all kinds of gift certificate cards people can buy. Heck, I've even seen passes for Universal Studio's Hollywood sold there.

Over the past few years, I see more and more people exchanging gift cards for presents, particularly so office gift exchanges.

You'd think Disney would be more than happy to hold our money for us.

I know it is not Disney, but I recently found something out that I thought was really interesting. I was cruising around on Deltas website and found out that American Express now offers an option for travelers checks that is on a card. It is reloadable and offers the same protections as far as theft and loss that the regular travelers checks do. It carries the American Express logo just like what is on their credit cards and is good to use anywhere that accepts American Express. I like this idea very much for saving for trips, especially knowing that American Express is backing it with their customer friendly system. Here is the link, sorry it is a long one:

I looked into those cards too, but it turns out that you have to put a minimum of $300 on one, and it costs $14.95 to open it. You can only add money to it in increments of $100 and it costs $5 to add money. And you can only open it or reload it with a credit or debit card, no cash.

It's a nice alternative to travellers checks for those who buy several hundred dollars worth at a time, but not for those of us who add $10 and $20 to our trip savings at a time.

hey, that isn't bad Will! In the past, anytime I sent something like this I received a form letter saying that WDW does not accept the submission of ideas! Hope it makes it to someone that can actually make a difference!

great idea WC!!

Our Disney store used to sell pins, adult sized clothing - housewares - stuff for pets even and it was great /then it turned for the past year or two into ALL kids stuff - I remember the store having many people in it with the adult Disney stuff but lately with just all kids - the place is pretty thin.

I told them that there are bunches of us grown kids who would like to spend MONEY on stuff for grown kids or ourselves - they said they realized that and are bringing the stuff back - hmmm - we'll see - as I walked out of the store with my neat WDW magazine the lady stopped me and told me it was not free lol ooops thought it was
