UPDATED: Java no longer needed! How To: Adding a Trip Countdown Timer

[Tagrel]

Here's how to add a countdown timer to your signature or anywhere for that matter! You can also look at the VB Code instructions (http://tagrel.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode#countdown)

Just insert the code: YYYYMMDDhhmm

Where: (leading zeros required)
YYYY = year
MM = month
DD = day
hh = hour
mm = minute

For example: 200907121630

will display: 200907121630

The above example is set for: July 12, 2009 at 4:30pm (military time)

** Make sure that your time value is set for Eastern Time!

Two countdown's per signature is a suggested maximum.

Let me know if you see any major problems. If you get a gray box instead of a timer, then you probably are not seeing ANY countdown timers correctly. First close all instances of your browser and restart. If they still don't show up try a computer restart.

Last, make sure your Java is up to date with the latest version: Java Runtime Environment (http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp)

***** Java is no longer used for the countdown timers! They are now a static image and will no longer 'count down' dynamically. This should help alleviate a lot of the problems people were having with the Java Applets. :yes:

I will have to give this a shot if I can EVER get my DH to sit down and pick some definite dates! We are supposed to sit and do that this weekend.

The good news is that he is due to be promoted to manager this summer, and his Firm's "new manager" training has traditionally been at WDW. Our trip isn't planned until May 2004 but I MIGHT get down there a bit earlier!! :D

OK I downloaded the Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 (http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp) and did a restart. I've updated my signature with the [ countdown ] appropriate date [ /countdown ] (without the spaces), but all I'm getting is the grey box. That goes for everyones countdown too. What, if anything, am I doing wrong?

If it means anything I just logged in with Mozilla Firefox and I could see them. Still can't with IE though.

Only thing I can think of is that there is a setting in IE that is not enabled. Look under Tools/Internet Options - Advanced tab. Scroll down the list and you should find Java (Sun) with a checkbox for Use JRE 1.5....

Make sure that is checked and restart if you had to check it.

If its working in Firefox, the problem has to be between IE and Java. Might also try removing Java and reinstalling it.

Let us know how it goes.

I have teh same problem with IE. I looked for the setting you mentioned, Dave, and I didn't see it.

I'll keep playing with it to see if I can figure it out. Even the instructions shows a black box for me.

If the setting is not present, than I would have to assume that the Java install did not function correctly. And if it is not installed correctly, then that would explain the blank countdown timers....

Reinstalling Java (may require uninstall first) would be my next suggestion.

I put up my countdown clock but when I got to the Java site, it won't let me download anything. A box pops up from Explorer saying ActiveX controls prohibit the page from loading. What shall I do?

When I am downloading things that require Active X, I usually get a yellow banner bar at the top of my browser window that tells me to click on it to enable Active X and continue the download. Are you getting anything like that?

Sounds like you have Active X controls disabled. Check under Tools/Internet Options and the Security Tab. There is a Custom Level button that should show what is enabled and disabled. There is an entire section just on ActiveX controls. You could try enabling them (if they are disabled) and then set them back the way they were after you install Java.

I can see your counter. Might be a JAVA problem on your machine. ? I had a problem seeing them and had to enable a JAVA add-on. It was up-to-date....just needed to click enable on my add-on list.

Hi Everyone! Lots of people have enjoyed our site countdown timers, but for many the dynamic Java applets (i.e. little programs that ran for each one) caused browser load issues and sometimes straight out crashes.

So, I have changed the countdown timers to now be static images. The look very close to the same as they did, but no longer 'count down' in real time. They are accurate at the time a page containing one is displayed and will be re-created each time that page is displayed. But no more Java runtime necessary, and hopefully faster page loads and no more crashes! :yes:

When you are setting the time for your countdown be sure to use Eastern Time. And other than that all the existing countdown timers should work as they always have. And if you turned off signatures because of countdown timer issues, try turning them back on and see if the problem is fixed.
