View Full Version : Another silly question

OK, another silly question. If y'all get tired of them just tell me to knock it off. This is a major decision though, and I'm trying to be really well informed. Even though I understand the DVC properties, I've never even looked at a timeshare before, so I'm getting an education along the way.
Here's the question - How did you go about deciding how many points were right for you?
At first we were talking about only getting enough to do about 9 days every other year. Then I started thinking we could use points on the years we didn't go to Disney to go to HHI or somewhere in the World Passport collection. We're thinking about getting enough to visit during Choice season, because my kids are on a "modified" schedule, and get 2 weeks off in Oct. But what if we want to go in July sometime? At this point a one bedroom is good for us, but as the kids get older, and want more space or to bring a friend, we might go to two bedrooms. So, how did you decide?

Not a silly question at all. When we first bought at VWL, we just went with the most points we could afford and picked a round number. We knew it was enough for a studio for almost 2 weeks when we typically went in the summer months. Of course, after trying a one bedroom, that was what we later decided we HAD to have. :?
I did better planning wise with BCV. We bought enough to put us in a one bedroom Sun - Thurs during the summer months. We'll bank and borrow every so often to add a weekend night here or there. You can get very creative when planning how to stretch your points.
Speaking of which reminds me. You will find a great planning program here: Caskbill's DVC Planner (http://www.seidata.com/~wneth/id57.htm)
You can make all kinds of scenarios to see what points would be needed. I just covers the main DVC resorts, but I really like it.

Our start in DVC sounds just like Tagrel's. We went with what was affordable to us at the time. Our 200 points have done us ok so far, but we are definitely going to want more. If we had the money we'd already have another 100 or 150 or so.
You just gotta look at the point charts and figure about what you're gonna need to do the vacations you want and then decide if you can afford the purchase or financing, whichever way you go. Sounds like you're already going about it the right way. :)

I don't remember why we went with 220 points when we first bought, but it was probably because that's what we could afford at the time. We ended up buying an additional 30 points very shortly afterwards, and then just last month we bought another 30 points (all at BWV).
I suggest you buy what you can afford and add on when you have the opportunity.
We took a look at when we wanted to go, the length of time we wanted to stay, and the type of room we wanted. After that, it was just the math. We wound up with 240 pts at OKW which lets us go for a week in a 1 br any time but the 'high' season and have some left over to either bank or use for a short trip.
It just worked for us. But remember, you can always add on!
And your questions are far from silly, you haven't asked one yet that I didn't ask when we were looking.

We initially got 200 pts, because we figured it would be enough for a nice trip every other year and (perhaps more importantly) because we wanted to pay cash, but run the purchase thru our mileage affiliate credit card to get the miles and that is the largest amount Disney would let us do that with
Since then, I added 150 points so that I could use some and my young adult kids could do so on their own if they wished, and then another 100 because I mistakenly thought we had initially purchased 250, and I wanted each of the kids to have 250 points after I die (which may be Tuesday when they find out I have been frittering away their inheritance on DVC points)
