I'm finding my Lumix inconveniently large, and Bruce's little one inconveniently slow.
The other night at Wishes, I was next to a man at a "trashcan tripod". His photos were FAB-U-Lous! He said his camera was a new model "just out" Panasonic blahblahbla which I have since forgotten. It was FAST - and he said quite a bit about that.
Can you help me fill in the "blahblahbla" part with the name of this extraordinary camera?
(I really want it all - the zoom of my Lumix and the speed of an SLR without the weight.)

Do you remember what it looked like? Here is Panasonic's page of current cameras (http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Cameras-Camcorders/Digital-Cameras/2010-LUMIX-Digital-Cameras.list.148042_11002_7000000000000005702).
Perhaps he had something like a DMC-LX5?

it would fit in a pocket. I never saw the 'front' of it so it looked like most of the cameras on that page.

We just purchased two new Panasonics. We are still getting to "know" them but so far really liking them.
Lumix DMC ZS6 12x zoom 12 megapixel
HD video
you can get at Costco for around $270. I have seen it elsewhere for about $350.
This is a sweet camera. Does an awful lot for such a small package. And fits in your pocket.
The other one just came out this past August.
Lumix DMX LX5 5x zoom 10 megapixel
HD video
This camera is suppose to be really good for low light photos. You still need a tri pod to get the best quality. It is a little bigger than the one above and has more manual features for the creative photographer. It is small and light weight. Again, a really sweet camera.
Be careful when puchasing this camera. You CANNOT get a spare battery at this time. There are a few websites that say they have it, but don't buy them. The battery will not fit. My local camera store is trying to locate a battery but I am on a wait list.

Thanks, Linda! I think the second one must be the one - the gentleman said the downside was that the zoom wasn't that good. What I REALLY need is one with the best features of both, I did buy a gorilla pod, so that takes care of the tripod need.

Beside the Panasonic, I believe the Canon S95 and Nikon's new P7000 are in the same class when it comes to quality. Both the Canon and Nikon were just announced so they are not available yet. Not that I want to complicate your search but it's good to check out others to see which one has the features you like to use.
