We are driving to WDW (3 vehicles) in just a few weeks! The 2 vehicles with kids in them will have DVD or tape players to watch movies. DH and I have been designated the "luggage vehicle" since our kids are flying in to meet us and we have the smallest vehicle of the crowd (GMC Jimmy), which doesn't really give us space for a DVD player ect. I'd like to take a book on tape to listen to (radio can be so iffy especially in the mountians) can anyone make a great suggestion? I don't care (usually ) for thrillers or mysteries, I'm a sucker for romance stories and DH likes Tom Clancy and that type of book! We both read the "Star Wars books" so I was thinking of the most recent one of those. Any other suggestions????

Question #2

Mostly for those of you that live down south or drive alot to WDW. WE will spend the night at Tifton Georgia on our trip and go on to WDW the next day. I have to be in Orlando by 1 pm EDT . How many hours should we figure from Tifton to WDW. (We drive alot but go past WDW to Bonita Springs usually) How many hours do I need ot figure to WDW from Tifton GA??

Thanks!!

Hi Bookwood,
My friend listened to The Notebook on tape last year on the way to vacation and said it was very good. I am gonna go see the movie when it comes out.

depends on how fast you drive and how many times you stop, but I would figure 4-5 hours

We listened to the Left Behind book on a trip last year and enjoyed it very much...but the driver must pay attention to the road and not the book ;)

I think 5 hours max from Tifton would be the max to Disney.

How about the Harry Potter books on tape?

You might also scour your music collection for CDs of artists from your high school days. I love listening to my 80's CDs on a long drive and bringing back memories of the days when I first got a drivers license. You could even make a couple of mix CDs with all your favorite music, and as you get closer to WDW you might switch to Disney park or movie music.

On the way home, playing Taps on a loop is all I'm ever in the mood for.

Here's a few books that have entertained DH and I on trips.. actually i have bot's in my car all the time. The following ones have entertained both DH and I while traveling...

Stuart Woods writes detective type books... has tons of them. But they are not of the Clancy type. A little more to general audience and they have lots of humor in them. The readers are really great too.

Danielle Steele...Yes I know but before you blow these two off read on...
"the Cottage" romance for you and its just plain entertaining... about a movie star of the rock hudson calliber and his financial woes. My Dh loved listening to it
and

"the Ghost" ....dh liked this too... and so did my friends DH.. not a typical steele.. book

And we just listened to this one on our last trip...

"Catch Me if You Can"--- the unabridged version i rented from cracker barrel... Like the movie...it's the TRUE..story of the guy who impersonated airline pilots, doctors, professors, and attorneys... all while he was under 21 yr old. Funny and entertaining ...

Hope this helps... I'm bored to death on a trip without several bot's.

I got some books on tape for my DH when he was doing a 90 minute commute to work. He said he almost got in an accident a few times because he got interested in the story and his attention wandered. That was the end of that idea.

I'm glad to hear others have listened to them while driving without mishap. Personally, I'm leery of them now.

We use the movies in the car for long drives now and that doesn't bother him He says since we always bring movies we've seen, he doesn't have to pay close attention to what he's hearing.

I'll be looking into the books mentioned. Thanks to for the time frame from Tifton (DH and I will probably take off and let the others stop as they will on the way there.) I have to be at a ticket gate before 2 pm and he will head to MCO to pick up the girls flying in around 3 that afternoon (I think).

Wow, that's testimony as to how good some of the readers are!

I've never been bothered like that.. if i get into cities and sticky situations i just turn them off. I really love them too for local driving.. I dont' mind all the traffic lights so much....Yes, sitting at traffic lights behind little old ladies who don't know they can turn left on a green light...lol... Keeps my blood pressure down.

Sharon- I like Danielle Steele, I have several of her early books (she went a little fantasy there for a while!!) but don't think DH would want t listen so I think I'll look for Azkaban (which he hasn't read and I haven't reread since seeing the movie) or something out of the Star Wars series!

I would highly recommend the DaVinci Code or Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. These books / stories have it all - a little intrigue, mystery, romance and interesting historical references.

Others that I think are similar in style are any of the Robert Ludlum books - fast paced, always some romance and intrigue - great stories that pass the time well. We rarely drive as we are in Illinois and I usually have free airling tickets from work travel, but I do listen on the plane, at night etc.

Have a great trip - I know you will find something you like!

I agree with the recommendations of Harry Potter (any of the 5 are fantastic with Jim Dale reading them!! - Go with the Unabdridged) or with Davinci Code or Angels and Demons. I have been listening to books on tape for about 5 or 6 years now. I discovered them in Maryland when I was commuting to and from DC for work -- and now I use them when I have to drive all over Florida for work or just don't want to listen to the endless prattle on the radio.

Did someone say 'Star Wars'?? Its less than a year until the final episode  I am thinking of using a different name every day until next may. Remember how much fun that was at the RCH??

Sharon, you should be ashamed of yourself reading Daniel Steele ;-) My wife reads all of her books. I wanna know why women say MEN are pigs!! The stuff thats in those books makes even ME blush ;-)

Have a nice trip Bookwood  If I were you, I'd invest in satelite radio, then you can have the same station all the way down :lolly:
