Strawberry Daiquiri

Our guide was very friendly and upbeat – she has our attention throughout the entire tour – there were about seven of us in the group and we started at the river’s edge looking at the Mississippi. We were hearing stories of how the Mississippi was the REAL reason for the purchase and why Thomas Jefferson purchased Louisiana so cheaply – to this day it is still talked about as being The Greatest Real Estate Deal ever made!! We walked through the Vieux Carre (French Quarter) , Artillery Park, The French Market, Jackson Square and Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop. Took a photo of Tramp and one of Scamp standing against the Bourbon Street sign – forgot to get one of me – the street sure does look different in the day time – almost didn’t recognize it without its neon lights and smell of beer - Our guide had a book of maps, sketches, photographs and really took us back to New Orleans in 1803. Every now and then throughout the tour we would find shade and stop and get a bit of history, look at a map or view an image of one of the men of that time that changed America. We moved on to the Ursuline Convent, the oldest building in the Mississippi River Valley. While we were walking around – it was a school for girls and an orphanage – it reminded me of my school days – the wood, the carvings, the staircases and the sacred statues – I expected Sister Bernard to walk around the corner scolding me for not being in English Class but the guide instead pointed out various statues on the grounds and why they were there – those in the convent were important historical women who shaped the city of New Orleans and its people in countless ways. Prayer had much to do with saving the town during the Battle of New Orleans..

We heard the entire story of he Battle of New Orleans and how Andrew Jackson secured the Mississippi River for America. This part of the tour I listened to from the ground – we were in Jackson Square and while they stood under a shady tree – I collapsed on a shady patch of grass – I had to sit down – lie down more like it!! Tramp gave me his water bottle and I just sat there regrouping – a pigeon could have came up and sat on my arm I wouldn’t have noticed – all too soon we were on the move again – walking past one of the artists who sit within the park working on their craft – pretty amazing what some of them can do with ink/paint/canvas/rags – truly amazing – pretty amazing too that a guy would sit and sell jokes for $1.00 – if you give him $1.00 he will tell you a joke! We actually saw someone buy a joke – Scamp wanted to also, but we told him to keep walking! We went ahead to the Cabildo Museum where the Louisiana Purchase transfer treaty was executed and saw Napoleon's Death Mask, the table where the LA Purchase was signed – I asked where the actual document was – and the reply was in Baton Rouge – everyone in the group agreed that was not fair – it should be in New Orleans – we thanked our guide for the wonderful job she did explaining it all to us and she gave us each a Louisiana Quarter – nice touch!

We are just about at 3:45 when the tour ends and we continue looking through the next floor of the museum – it is not that large and find our way back down to the street – walking along Decatur to St. Louis which is where the New Orleans School of Cooking is!! We pass a Daiquiri Bar – they are all over town – every corner has one it seems – I get a strawberry daiquiri to go – Tramp gets a beer – Scamp a Coke and we continue walking to St. Louis - We turn right - up ahead is Johnny's Po'Boys - oooh yummm - Tramp assumes we are headed there for dinner as his Anniversary surprise - but before going there he sees the New Orleans School of Cooking which includes a shop of spices/gizmos and kitchen gadgets - he walks across and goes into the store section - how easy can this get I think - he has walked in right where I want him - hmmm maybe too easy - maybe he knows?? As we are looking around I slide over to the register and tell the lady that Tramp is here for the cooking surprise Tenth Anniversary - she goes into another room and tells the chef who comes out and walks up to Tramp and says - "Sir, follow me please." Tramp looks a bit puzzled for a moment and then it becomes clear - this is his present - a cooking session in New Orleans !!!

I must let it be known that Tramp needs no cooking class at all - well maybe baking - but when it comes to everything else - he is funtastic!!! I just thought it would be a fun present - cooking his own dinner in New Orleans - a town of food!!
