I read this one on RADP. Two CM's reported this. The Cantina will be demo'd and rebuilt, possibly as a 2 story restaurant. The restaurant inside the pavilion will become more upscale (I read that as higher prices). The long awaited Tequila bar will take the space where the jewelry store is now and the jewelry store will move over the where Kidcot is now.
I haven't seen this anywhere else. It's just a rumor, don't shoot the messenger.

I love MEXICO!
We enjoy the Outdoor Cantina each time we visit Epcot. I haven't eaten inside for a couple years, but always enjoy going in to look around. I would be happy to see improvements. I think Disney always does a great job when upgrading.

I have mixed feelings on the rumor.
I'd heard about the tequilla bar replacing the jewelry store, and since it's one of the few shops in Mexico where I occassionally buy something, I'm glad to hear it's moving over to the Kidcot section. I remember when that used to be a giftshop with glassware and decorative objects.
As for the tequilla bar, I have no interest in it. Don't expect to check it out.
As for the two story restaurant, I'm not sure if I like the idea or not. If it remains a counter service restaurant, but expands seating and gives folks an air conditioned place to eat, that could be a good thing, but I feel it should be built on the side of pavillion side of WS, not on the lagoon side. Except for the restaurant in the UK, the other lagoon side buildings are small, and I feel should remain that way.
Finally a more upscale Mexican restaurant? I guess they could switch to steaks and seafood, Mexican style. Of little interest to me. Then again, I think the current restaurant is over prices for what it serves.

I am with Robin here. We have fine Mexican restaurants here in Arizona at much lower prices than theirs. If they build a new building, I see high prices to recoup their costs. So strange, IMHO, to close some resturants like the one in POFQ, close Boatwright's for breakfast, keep Odyssey closed 80 % of the time, and in a bad economy , build a new high cost restaurant???? Why not utilize what they have and maximize their investment???:o

It will take a lot more than a remodel to get me to eat at that 'Upscale' Mexican restaurant again. Nope.. Not me... :blech: Nothing short of two years of good reviews is going to get me back there again!
Now, expanding the counter service and adding air conditioning would be a big plus for us. As summer travelers we do like that CS, but I hate sitting outside in August! :hot:
Also glad that the jewelry store will be relocated as the girls like it and it always has some reasonably priced items. But a Te-kill-ya bar will get little use from me.. Unless the Margaritas are better than those outside! :eat:

The store that used to be the travel and tourism place is closed, and the kid cot is now in the lobby in front of the person painting the little wooden animals, on the other side of a low wall. No sign of restauraunt closure yet and they were both doing a booming business tonight.

I wonder if they will do much to the restaurant inside besides change the menu and up the prices. I ate with friends there some time this past Fall and the food was okay. Nothing spectacular, but not bad. I don't think it was any fancier than what's served in the average Mom & Pop Mexican restaurant.
I can't help but think of Yak & Yeti and wonder if Disney is planning to outsource the two Mexican Restaurants. With the expected slow down in tourism until the global economy improves, I don't see it as a good time to raise prices. Unless people are getting the Dining Plan, I see families looking to cut back on what they'd normally spend.

I REALLY dislike the indoor restaurant. I'm with Tag on that one! YUK! However, the atmosphere can't be beat, so I would be ok with a new restaurant. A 2-credit one (if they make it REALLY upscale)? Nope!
I'd be surprised if they built a 2-story building on the lagoon side b/c it would block the view, but stranger things have happened. I think the cantina is one of the better cs places around. Slow service but decent food.

I have never eaten in Mexico because we have great Mexican food here in Oklahoma. The jewelry store is one of my favorite places because I end up buy items there for myself and friends.

I keep picturing drunks from the Tequilla bar, tripping down the steps outside. Or at best being obnoxious in the Plaza.
Can someone explain to me again why they closed Pleasure Island.

Just upgrading the catina would be great without upscale prices. They have to do something about the cup of coffee squatters and others that sit for hours waiting on the fireworks.I hate looking for a table with food in hand and others just sitting and not eating or sipping on air in a cup.
The tequilla bar will be okay but the $8.00 to $12.00 shot price will keep me away.

P.S. I will have my own bottle of patron back at the room
