MissB and I have decided to enter the Amazing Digital Scrapbooking Race (ADSR)! We will be Team Pixie Dusters. MissB will be creating our blinkie as soon as she gets done travelling the real globe (as opposed to the virtual globe) and settles back into her home.

In the meantime - I thought I would start us up a thread to generate some energy and cheerleading!

What is the ADSR? It is sponsored by Natural Designs in Scrapbooking and has many other websites that participate as host sites. Teams of two kick off the six week event on January 4th, when we get our first assignment. We then have two assignments to complete every week. We will have detours and roadblocks along the way. When we complete assignments - we get free stuff!!!!! Free is good!!!!! And if we make it all the way through and get all assignments in on time, we go into a drawing for the grand and runner-up prizes!

So, like all good racers, to prepare for the event I have been exercising my digi-muscles and finding challenges around the digi-world each week. Two weeks ago I completed a progressive blog train challenge and last week I completed a speed scrap combined with a "use this kit" challenge. This week I will progress to makeing two pages with two challenges and the week after, I will progress to two pages from three challenges and then finally to two pages with four challenges.

So I'll be back in a couple of days and post my results from the last two weeks and let you know what the challenges were. Until then, anyone willing to cheer us on - please do!

That sounds like fun! I have been doing quite a bit of digital scrapbooking, and really enjoying it! I fear that I am not as creative as you or Miss B, Nancy, but I am having fun nonetheless!

OK here is my first practice round. If this is a scrapping half marathon, then this would be my 6 mile run.

The challenge here was spread across about 8 blogs. Each designer posted a portion of the kit. You had to use at least one item from each of the kits. It was not easy! I thought it would be a pieces of cake, but some kits had elements that I wouldn't normally use, or ones that I had a hard time with placing on the page. I finally got it though!

So the little flower branch had a lot more flowers on it before I started. I erased a bunch of them so it wouldn't overwhelm the photos and put it in the little birdies beak. And then I created a birdie family and hung the family initial off of a ribbon/clip. The green paper has been made into a frayed mat by use of a great overlay that I use a lot. Oh and I used an old photo overlay to make the August 2003 photo look older than it is! LOL

Here is training run #2. This time I repeated the six mile run, but I speeded it up! Two challenges in one.

The first challenge was the kit. I had to use all of the items provided in a kit. I really like this designers mini kits, they are always fun to work with.

The second challenge was a speed scrap. Online for one hour, they give you one instruction every ten minutes. Then you have one extra hour to complete the LO and upload it. Harder than it sounds, getting one instruction every ten minutes is tough and you invariably have to re-do stuff when I new thing comes out that totally throws you off.

Now - because of some of the rules, I posted the speed scrap LO and then modified it a bit so it used the rest of the kit (eg 3 papers).

So this sweet little flower was growing in the sand at Castaway Cay last Sept. It was the only one that wasnt in a bunch.

1. One photo, cropped in a square
2. One paper and only one
3. 10 ribbons, stitches or (can't remember), at least 4 of which are in a row. Can use the same item 10 times - I used ribbons and stitches.
4. Title with an alpha and a font - I had that for the speed scrap, but changed it for the other challenge
5. Use a tag and date the layout - see it by the flower?
6. Elements, whatever you like, in colors that will pop off the page (OK good enough for me!)
7. Journalling needs to be lyrics and one word needs to be in your title also and you needed to accent the word so it stood out. The other title was SUNbather and I used "I just want to soak up the SUN"

Well, I am back :D and ready to scrap.

Nancy, that second challenge page is awesomer than awesome. Your use of ribbons and stitching is too beautiful.

Chris! I'm so glad you'll be participating too! Looking forward to seeing your work.

Lynner, you've caught the digital bug! I'm so happy for you. It isn't the same as the wonderful textures of paper and fabric and real ribbon but it sure can be fun (and cheap).

Okay, off to finish our blinkie!

OK, here's #1 for this week. MissB has done one also so I hope she comes in and posts hers.

This was a Roadmap to Scrap at Scrap Matters. My 13 year old grandaughter has her first crush so I made this for her (ya right for me too, I'm not too old to swoon!)

The rules:

Use an even number of photos.
2. All photos need to be in color.
3. Use at least 5 pieces of paper.
4. Use at least 2 frames.
5. Use some stitches.
6. Use a hanging element.
7. Use at least one font and one alpha in your title.
8. Include at least 2 sentences of journaling.
One of the frames is stitching and my sentences are really short! I can't help it, he was dazzling me! LOL Anyone who has read the book will understand that!

And here's my take on the same Challenge Nancy did. The photos are pretty small, so I linked it to a bigger version if you want to see it up close.

And then I raised the ante, with a challenge featuring this template:
http://i478.photobucket.com/albums/rr141/chiakunz/12-23-template-packaging.jpg

And to make it harder, these rules from a different challenge on a different site:
.- dark and textured or patterned background
.- some christmas decorations but like a litlle cluster
.- a bright or glitter alpha
.- only one thing more… enjoy!!And came up with this:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b78/snowleopard55/scraps/sb08_1st27thxmas_adsrpractice2_p.jpg

Nancy's turn!

edited to add: if I'd tried to make that ornament pop off the page, I couldn't have done a better job. I'm still looking at it!

Posting my penultimate practice layout, a review of my last year...it was a wild ride for me. For a person as bad at flying as I am, that I took so many flights is amazing. Um...how many? I count 19 flights represented on that chart--now many of them were 2 flights to get to a destination but still...when it's this hard to get on the plane, they count.

I should do a "fear of flying" scrapbook page?

Here is my page for the first ADSR challenge:
Rules
1 Tear a photo into at least three pieces
2 Add journaling

These are soooooo cool. I'm so impressed! I was trying to see how the rules work. It looked like different sites make up the assignments - is that right? If so, do you have to use specific lines of products?

Yes, each challenge is hosted by a different site and they make it up (although some do two I believe). You are not required to use anyone's kits - unless they give everyone a free one and then we'd all have to use the same thing. And you get free stuff for every LO you complete.

Nancy's faster at this than I am

And on this challenge, Nancy and I worked together to create one layout! I don't think it has a "design by committee" look though. And it's fun to have our coast-to-coast snow documented.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b78/snowleopard55/scraps/ASDR4/sb09_asdr402_snowandice_p.jpg

We had to use the theme "Cabin Fever" and they were very persnickety about exactly how many of what thing to put on.

The birdhouse is mine; the other two photos are Nancy's.

For this challenge, called an Intersection because we had to collaborate on one layout, we had a number of rules, and they seemed to be changing by the minute, or at least, had layers added on.

4 different papers, 8 different elements, 3 photos (can repeat), 1 title, journaling, 2 different fonts

And a Cabin Fever theme.

So we emailed a bit and picked our thoughts out about the photos, settled on winter, identified the kits we would use and then MissB graciously said for me to go first - which ended up making sense given the time zone! So I loaded in my two photos and a few elements and a title (we knew we wanted my birdhouse and her cardinal, although there are none in Washington) and sent it off to her last night. She then worked on it overnight (well to me overnight LOL as I got it this AM) adjusted things around, made the photo mats got the journaling in there finished up with a few elements and voila, that was it.

What amazed both of us is that I picked the background paper and look how well it matches her birdhouse! And then the two stories of Christmas snow went so well together. And my little house, her birdhouse. And I just love how she had some gold-ish paper that matched my gold stamp element and helps to bring up that color.

This was a very exciting LO for me!

Thank you MissB for making it so easy and fun! :minnie:

kathleena

OK - this challenge was scary! I actually had to look at something that was a shadow in my mind! We were to pick a gallery, and then pick the first layout we uploaded to the gallery, and then re-do it! I knew I had to re-do my very first digital layout. I knew I had to do it. I'd been wanting to do it. It was just very scary to have to think about looking at it. But.......I did.

The only other rule is the journaling/words on the layout had to be the same. You couldn't add to them or take off. I assumed the repeating the same words was OK, I'm sure they will tell me if it's not!

So here is the old layout, completed December 2007
http://digibydesign.com/mall/galleryPP/data/500/WDWDVCMeetDec05_copy_for_web.jpg

And here is the new one - what a difference a year makes!

Hey Chris - don't you get Cabin Fever when it gets too darn HOT to go out? Or during hurricanes?

:D

Actually, it is my allergies that give me Cabin Fever. When the Cypress trees are in bloom, I am miserable outside. We live right next door to a swamp, so there is a whole forest of cypress trees right behind my house. Hmm...I could have used photos of the swamp, didn't think of that, lol. I don't let the heat stop me from going outside. I DON'T go outside during hurricanes, but have only gone through one so far. It hit during the night, so I slept through most of it.

Here's challenge #4. This one had two parts 1) Artistic elements - 3 of them and 2) heartfelt journaling. So for the #1 I have the music sheet overlays, the angel wings and the little doll. I think the bird cage qualifies too and maybe the jewel heart flower. Its hard to tell, descriptions are so oblique sometimes.

Very hard to scrap about mom, but this is my 3rd layout for her and I only cried a little bit so it's getting easier.

Seeing this picture of her always reminds me of how playful she was. I used music and the bird because she had a beautiful soprano voice.

I have two to post, one done the night before I left on vacation, the second done while I was away.

First challenge was to have a layout with no photos and to use three frames. I used a circle frame, partly off the page, to make it look like a bridge of sorts. This is about my baby kitty Whitney. I actually wrote this back on the day we euthanized here and posted it here.

I combined this with a challenge at another website where they are doing an ABC challenge and this was the letter B.

http://www.ndisb.com/photopost/data/688/Cats-Whitney-RainbowBridge-Flat.jpg

Next up - they did a roadblock and only one of us could do the challenge Since I was away, MissB did it and I'll let her post her layout here.

Sunday's challenge was to take a kit and use all of the items in it. I wasn't feeling the love of the coloring in the kit and wasn't feeling too creative to find something to go with it. But the bird kept speaking to me. or tweeting to me. So I went with that and a photo I took just before leaving on vacation. I completely recolored the kit to match another I had. Being the queen of clutter, I made sure I cluttered this up sufficiently. Someday I will do a simple layout, I promise.......there really are three cardinals in that photo of the tree and the blowing snow........

I combined this with a template challenge at another site.

I have a few to catch up on here! The race is now over and we are waiting for them to draw the winners!

I can't remember the correct order here so will just post as I remember them.

This one was to scraplift an "idol". I selected someone who does a lot of Disney themed kits and is a huge Disney fan. I scraplifted her over all layout, turned 90 degrees and the word art she did, I created my own. These pics are of Tinker Bells Fairy Garden at the 2007 F&G Festival at Epcot. I used her "Sprite" kit.

http://www.digishoptalk.com/gallery/data/4319/Disney-Epcot-F_G-TinksGarden-2-Flat.jpg

We had to ask one question to someone, living or dead, and then do a layout with one photo that expresses that person or question and for journaling, only the question itself. I chose someone we all know and love

http://www.digishoptalk.com/gallery/data/500/Disney-Walt-Question-Flat.jpg

kathleena

Then we had to do a page that had at least two generations on it and had to use something metal, something real (eg scanned in), lace, flowers and I think there was something else....can't remember. So this photo of some family in Norway in the 1930's. The gent in the center with the hat and the white beard is my great grandfather, Hans August Ahlsen. The lady over on the right is his sister and she was about my age in that photo, a few years younger I think. Her hair was completely white. Remind you of anyone? I love seeing family genes in action!

I would mention here that I often combine challenges, so this layout combines three! One was this ADSR, another was to feature the letter C and a third was to use elements from a certain designer (I used her template). SO I get to post this on three websites and get various points or freebies for it.

http://www.digishoptalk.com/gallery/data/500/Family-Norway-HansAugust-Flat.jpg

Then we had a roadblock and because MissB had done the previous roadblock, I had to do this one. The challenge was to ask your partner at least 5 questions and then to a layout based on those questions. So here she is!

http://www.digishoptalk.com/gallery/data/500/Friends-MissB-Name-Blur.jpg

And here is the journaling

What is your name?
Catherine Ruth [maiden name] [married name

How did you feel about your name growing up?
I was called "Cathy" and I hated that name! There were always at least two other ones in my classes so it didn't feel special. Besides, just saying it sounds nasal and whiney. I couldn't go by "Catherine" because that's what I was called when I was in trouble. It wasn't until I was in my senior year of High School that I found a name that I liked and began calling myself by my initials, "CR" which is what I am called to this day.

How did you get your name?
I was named after two relatives. "Catherine" was someone in my family Tree who started the first orphanage west of Philadelphia. "Ruth" was my father's sister. When I told my mother I was to be called only "CR" from then on she said, "You can't use that name! That's a man's name! That was my father's name!" He had died when I was 4 and I never knew he was called that!

What is your nickname?
Besides CR, I'm called Bianca, Miss Bianca, MissB, and Binky by various groups of on-line friends.

What do you use for a screen name?
Mostly forms of bianca and MissBianca. In gaming and scrapping sites I'm snowleopard55.

What would your movie star name be?
Cat something. Cat Woodside. I read somewhere you take your address and SoutheastEightieth doesn't work. And in that fantasy world I'd be Slender and slinky like cat. Dream big!

Who do you admire that has your name?
Miss Bianca is a very famous and brave mouse. She had a long career before Disney hired her. Does Katharine Hepburn count?

The final "official" layout was an Intersection, where we had to collaborate on a layout. We had to use two photos, or one if we were both in it, small and in a corner. At least 1/2 the page had to be journalling about why we are storytellers. We both had to work on the page and we had to post what parts we each worked on. And they gave us a word art that we had to use. We decided to do this like we were in a chat room, but we really worked it out in emails.

http://www.digishoptalk.com/gallery/data/500/Friends-MissB-Storytellling-Flat.jpg?546

And the journaling
snowleopard55: Hey Nance, are you on your porch?
Kathleena: Are you kidding me – it’s freezing here!
snowleopard55: Freezing in Maine, raining in Seattle--what a surprise! Well, we can pretend
Kathleena: I am so not into this!
snowleopard55: Me either, but sometimes those are the challenges you like best afterwards. I hope.
Kathleena: OK so how do we talk about storytelling?
snowleopard55: You know Walt was the master storyteller!
Kathleena: So true! And he is an idol after all, maybe that’s why we like storytelling so much.
snowleopard55: Disney still tells such great stories
Kathleena: Yes, and they use storyboards - they are sort of like scrapbook pages!
snowleopard55: Good point! Maybe I'm doing this 'cause I never got to be the animator I dreamed of being.
Kathleena: And maybe that’s why I’m a storyteller, I love Disney and used to pretend I was a Princess!
snowleopard55: Well, maybe, and I just kinda like the freebies! LOL
Kathleena: LOL Ya, and to be honest, I like the attention! Hey look at me! Look what I’ve done!
snowleopard55: Well, not having any kids, I'm sure we do talk about our own lives more.
Kathleena: Yup, know what you mean, no kids here either. Not much family. I scrap for myself. Very selfish!
snowleopard55: And your pages are beautiful!
Kathleena: Aw thanks hun – and you know I’m your biggest fan! OK get serious, what‘s the definition of storytelling?
snowleopard55: Hold on while I google it
sto·ry·tell·er
Pronunciation: \ˈstȯr-ē-ˌte-lər\
Function: noun
Date: 1709
: a teller of stories: as a: a relater of anecdotes b: a reciter of tales (as in a children's library) c: liar , fibber d: a writer of stories
— sto·ry·tell·ing \-ˌte-liŋ\ noun
Kathleena: Well I could always spin off a good yarn, especially to my parents! LOL
snowleopard55: So I wonder what our pages would say if another family member wrote them……
Kathleena: Probably something entirely different. When I look at photos of my ancestors, I wonder……….I want to know!
snowleopard55: Well I guess we may never know what they'd say or even who will see these pages in our future.
Kathleena: Hopefully someone will remember me when I’m gone. I guess this is the way.
snowleopard55: Yeah.... Do you think we answered the question yet?
Kathleena: Probably about as much as I can. I’m done.
snowleopard55: Guess what I’m doing for Challenge 11, the question?
Kathleena: Ummmmm dunno. Go ahead, tell me
snowleopard55: A question to Walt!
Kathleena: No way!
snowleopard55: Yes way!
Kathleena: OMG!!!! I did too, mine’s already posted!
snowleopard55: Oh how funny, Great minds think alike!!! What did you ask him?
Kathleena: "Are you pleased?" what did you ask?
snowleopard55: "What would you do with all this technology?"
Kathleena: Awesome! I think that pages about him completes our storytelling circle!
snowleopard55: Yes, we learned from the master.
Kathleena: Good night Bianca, thanks so much for being my partner.
snowleopard55: Night, Nance. Thank you too. This has been awesome!

The final layout was supposed to be a part of the race, but there was a problem so they made it optional. I only did it so I could get the free kit. I'm not really pleased with the elements I used, so will re-do it someday. I was very restricted - could only use one flower, one frame, one ribbon, three staples, one alpha. And I had to have two photos. And four papers - three solid and one patterned. Very hard to work with a strict list, this was my least favorite layout of the whole race. I ended up just winging it. My re-do will change the papers and add more elements, plus a date.

This was also an Intersection, and MissB was to do the left side of the page. She had other instructions and other restrictions. Although she could add any elements she wanted.

Oh and the subject was the Diversity of Love :? Ok, so not sometime I would normally do. So like I said, I winged it. I went to see John Edward on Valentine's Day (awesome! fascinating!) and had all kinds of thoughts wrapped up in Mom. Also the annual Valentine's Day bandit hearts were fluttering all over town, so I got a great photo on a neat older building.

I have since read that there are groups of people who believe that people who are "in tune" with seeing 1's are fairly psychic and in tune with the spirit world. My Mom and I often discussed that we thought we were. Just one of those oddities that make me think.......

Hey y'all. I guess I took a break from Tagrel's. Things got a bit overwhelming to me but I'm doing better now. I thought I'd share the other layouts that I did for these challenges. In general the whole Amazing DigiScrapping Race was a great way to get out of my scrapping box and I had the best partner there.

Anyway:

Challenge 5: No photos, at least 3 frames. You can learn a lot about my late mom here through the symbolism I chose. This is VERY different from what I'd normally do. And very red--but that was always her favorite color.

Challenge 6: I had to take one of Nancy's posted layouts and turn it 45 degrees. I found it very difficult to incorporate the diamond shape that resulted but found a photo to make best use of that. One thing I like about this layout is that I think it looks very much like a non-digital layout.

Challenge 7: They gave us a kit and we had to use everything in it and nothing else. Not my style of kit, but I found a picture that went with it okay. Again scrapping my mom. I think this gives you a clue about my recent funk.

Challenge 8: You had to scraplift a layout by a digiscrapper you considered your "scrapping idol" and I didn't have one. So I looked at a lot of galleries and found something very different that I liked a lot. Here's my take on it. I couldn't resist putting in another Idol. You may roll your eyes now. I like this layout because it allowed me to do something that would be nearly impossible in the physical scrapping world. Plus it let me use a photo that was really too small to scrap in any other way.

Challenge 9: Nancy described this one really well, with the "realistic" element and lace and stuff. Not stuff I ever scrap with. But I had this great photo of my husband's mother and her many sisters and did a heritage style page that I don't hate. Well, except for the lack of journaling. Blame Bernard on that one--he couldn't remember the names of some of his aunts!

Challenge 10 was the one Nancy did by herself.

Challenge 11 was the question one. I thought it was totally fun that Nancy and I independently chose to ask a question of Walt Disney. My Walt is an edgy techno-Walt:

And the final challenge was the one where we did the story teller dialog. I didn't do challenge 13. As Nancy said, it was pretty limiting (and not in a fun way). Plus I was pretty depressed at that point to tell you the truth. Ah well, I am so glad spring is here!

More FABULOUS layouts! WOW!
My favorite of yours, MissB, was the viewmaster slide. Kathleena's was the remake of the Christmas page. I think. hmm.

What happened with the challenge?

Beautiful work, Miss B! Love every layout - even though you hated some of the kits and items you had to work with, you sure did a wonderful job. My favorite was the one without pictures, about your mom....actually because I think my mom's favorite things are represented there too...must be the age.

Take care, glad to see you back. Happy Spring!
