Our Vacation has been Postponed.

We will not be leaving in the morning for Disney.
My brother in law (wife's sister's husband) passed away this morning.Everyone said go, but we just couldn't consider it.
I called Disney and they are really great, in that they changed our date to May 12th and everything including reservation number stays the same. Same discount rate,same resort and same requests.Had to cancel all priority seatings and the Limo service.We had visions of losing a lot of money but family comes first.
We felt for sure we had lost the money we paid for the Airline tickets.We called them and they are giving us a full refund as soon as we send the the obituary to them. That was truly a shocker for us. I thought that was a complete loss.
Called Sister in law and she was very happy we did not lose any money and more so that we were going to be here for her.
So guess I have another countdown starting at 21 days.
I went yesterday and got the shots in my knees, but that will last two or three months.

Anyone have any comments on what the middle of May is like there.I didn't want to get too close to Memorial Day.

Oh Mickeefan - that is so sad about your BIL. :( I'm so sorry for your families loss. I think you made the right decision because you can be there for your family, and not feel guilty during your trip.

Its GREAT that Disney worked to reschedule you with the same hotel/discounts. :) And I'm glad to hear the Airfare, etc. worked out as well.

So sorry to hear of your BIL passing. It sounds as if it was for the best and glad to hear that Disney and airlines were so accomodating.

As for the middle of May. We had a great trip when we went for our honeymoon around the third week of May. The flower and garden festival at Epcot is still beautiful and blooming. The crowds were not bad and the weather was warm. Actually, we did have some pretty hot days (90+) - so keep that in mind.

I'm so sorry for your loss, mickeefan. I'll be keeping you and your wife in my thoughts. It is good to hear that both Disney and the airlines are taking care of you guys the right way.

On a positive note...May is a wonderful time to visit WDW. Suzy is right about the Flower and Garden festival. Beautiful! The weather should be nice, and the schools are not out yet, so that'll help the crowds. Have you realized yet that you are going to be there during the new EMH testing? You guys will be the first to find out how those extra nightime hours are. :D

Add my sympathies to the growing list. I am sorry for your family's loss. It is really sweet of you and your dw to stay and see her sister through such a difficult time.

On the upside, it sounds as if Disney and the airline are treating you right. I'll also echo the positive comments about Disney World in May. Our first trip was the second week of May, 1990 (honeymooners just like Suzy). The weather was gorgeous, the crowds weren't bad.

And I agree that when time permits, you should become familiar with the EMH testing Alicia mentioned. It could affect your PS plans as well as your park touring.

You and your extended family are in my thoughts and in my prayers.

Oh mickeefan, I am so sorry to hear of your family's loss. I am glad that everyone is being so accommodating, as it is one less thing on the mind during this sad time.

You asked about mid-May...we are arriving May 16 and we chose this time because of the lower crowd levels. I don't know if the levels will be as low as they would have this week, but as far as I know, only one Florida county's schools are out as early as the 16th. I hope you and DW are able to enjoy your postponed trip just as well.

May is a great time to go to Disney, weather is good, crowds are lower than April & you will get to test out the Extra Magic Hours.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and reaffirming that canceling our trip was there only thing to do. Even though we were told to go ahead since it has been planned for so long there was a definite positive reaction when we told her we would be there for her. I really don't see how we could have enjoyed our selfs if we had gone.
Everything has been rescheduled and I got new plane reservations this evening. We are guaranteed a seat on the plane but they could not tell us what seat. We could get split up but as long as we get there and back we are happy since we are only 21 days out.

I will ditto May, the F&G festival is a great thing to experience and it can get hot. Keep hydrated and you should be just fine.

I was so sorry to hear of your family's loss. You definately did the right thing to postpone your trip. I am sure it will be a tremendous comfort to your sister in law to have her sister by her side. The airline will make every effort once you are there to move folks around and have you sit together if they can. They also hold seats that are not released until that day for situations of need. I am glad you got the shots out of the way as well. It always takes me several days to begin to feel like myself after them. Is it the cortesone shots or the new wonder ones that are supposed to rebuild ? I have wondered how your knees were doing. have a great vacation. We shall miss you by one week. DH, Figgy, and her DH and I will be going 4/23. Will you still be there?

I am so sorry for your family's loss. It is wonderful that you have gone the extra mile to be there. Yous sister will aprreciate it, but so much more because of the extra sacrifice. You will be glad you made the choice to be there and it is refreshing to hear how cooperative and understanding your travel partners were. It's good to hear a positives of customer service sometimes.
