I need to purchase a gift for a friend of mine. She recently completed all the courses (I,II,III) of Wilton decorating. She loved it so I would like to get her something along those lines. Maybe a book (tips and ideas) and some supplies.
I am not a good cake decorator and while I would love to try the classes I have never been able to fit them in. In other words, I have no clue what might be useful.
Any recommendations?

A gift card to purchase exactly what she wants from the craft store :D

Seeing as it is a gift for someone who has already taken all the classes she probably has all the supplies she needs (that are in the gift price range). Therefore I would find a book with ideas for her to play around with.

I like my Wilton Carry Case. It keeps my tips, colors, and other stuff in one place.

maybe a container that rolls. (like the ones for scrapbooking)

I would second the gift card. They have a nice assortment of stuff at Michaels and this would give her the chance to pick up something she really wants.

The other option would be to find out what she already has, and pick something out for her.

A Wilton Catalog and gift card! You have no real way of knowing what to buy and what she already has (which is probably all the basics) (I personally would ADORE scrapbook store gift cards and I'm sure cake decorators are no different, lol)

Ask her if she has a cake turntable. They run about $54.99 and up at Michaels BUT-use a coupon in the Sunday paper and you will save 40-50% off that price!!!

Absolutely! I am not as good as others, but I have perfected the character cake. Next up, SpongeBob.

ETA, I always record the cake challenges on the Food Network.

A lovely pedestal cake plate to showcase her creations might be nice. Cake boards, doilies and boxes in assorted sizes are another idea. I am sure she is going to be asked to bake cakes and transporting them can be a problem.

I third the gift card to Michaels or a cake store that is in the area. I am learning how to decorate cakes and I have personally bought all my cake pans using coupons from Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Good luck with the gift selection.

If you want to do something a little fancier than 'just a card' you could get a small basket and put some small items in with the card. I can just be small items from the cake (or grocery) supply store like bottles of confetti sprinkles or other inexpensive items to make the basket colorful.

Robin,

I do the same thing with gift cards. One time I did a kitchen theme and bought all sorts of gadgets and in the middle of them I put my gift card. I also love to do baby baskets with things that most expectant parents wouldn't think to get ie travel size things. Great idea!!!!!!!!!

Now Robb, you know it isn't official until you post a picture, don't you? Could all be make-believe til then...just sayin'...

It would be hard unless you know what she has-maybe you can ask to see out of curiosity then go pick out something she doesn't have? I know the paste colourings are not cheap and additions to her collection would be handy, but it would be nice to know what colours she has already purchased.

I agree, the rotating plate is a great idea-something that you don't absolutely need and wouldn't likely purchase right off but oh so useful if you had one. And half-price is even better!

Well, now! I will post SpongeBob when done. For now, I am "on the road" for work, so I won't be near the other computer for another week. I will see if I can find Elmo (which I think I posted here before...)

I'd love to see pictures of all your cake creations! I don't think I'd have the patience of steady hand to do this, but always love to see them, and taste them.

I have read some very good suggestions here.

I would think that ANY gift would be a surprise, and appreciated.

I would go with a Tilt-able Turntable. It's not just a spinning turntable, it actually tilts for easier decorating.

Let us know what you decide.

Actually, unless she has a great deal of experience with decorating, the regular turntable will be much easier for her to use. I have both, and use the regular turntable much more than the tilting one.

How about a cute apron? If I don't use one, I end up with icing everywhere.
