Does anyone have recommendations on tripods? DW asked what I wanted for Fathers Day and without hesitation that's what I said I wanted. In doing very little research I came across the Sunpak PlatinumPlus 72" Tripod/Monopod available at Best Buy. The biggest selling points for me are the height and the quick-release plate. The price ($80.00) is at the high end of my budget, but is within my limit. A downside is that it doesn't come with a carrying bag or strap, but I have learned there is a strap for Bogen tripods that'll work with it.

Mark - here is the one I bought at Wal-mart http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5030904
I am really happy with it. It's surprisingly sturdy and well built for the price. Folds up small, has a carrying case and has two pop on mounting thingies that attache to your camera. The mounting thingies make set-up fast and easy as you do not need to fumble with screwing the camera to the tripod! It also has two leveling bubbles.

I did a google search for "mounting thingies'. Seems they are used for all kinds of things, not just photography!

Ok now I just had to google that too... at work. All I got on Google image was bicyces. How disappointing (but good for continued employment).

I'm so confused by all the technical talk.

Flash - a camera is a little box that draws pictures for you. "Mounting thingies" surpass my intellect though. Something tells me that they might be like the the deely-bobs that Sutree uses all the time!

Before this thread gets hi-jacked any further I think the mounting thingies John refers to are the same as quick-release plates.
Thanks for the heads up John, but the max height is only 61" (5' 1"). The 72" (6') is something that the one I'm interested in has as a strong selling point. I'm thinking of fireworks pictures at WDW and that extra 11" will (hopefully) mean shots without the tops of strangers heads.

I have a response.
"They are quick release mounting thingies".
Isn't there a pill for that? :curtsy:

If your tripod stays extended for more than 4 hours please see a doctor!
