I am thinking about surprising my DH with a chance to do a ride along at the Richard Petty thing. We are going to WDW to celebrate our anniversary, but it will also be his birthday the day we come home.

Here is the thing, I have looked up info on it and know he would love it by the descriptions. However, has anyone actually experienced it? The write up about it online makes it sound great, but they are a little biased in their opinion since they want you to do it!

Is it worth the $?

How long of a time frame would we have to set aside for doing it?

How did you get there? We will be staying at AKL but will not have a rental car. Would I just call a cab...how does that work?

Any tips, suggestions, or other info I would want to know before booking this for him?
THANKS!

Cheesehead,

I think if you have the opportunity to do this for your Dh, it would be an awesome gift! It is something my Dh has always wanted to do, but every year, he never seems to get to it. I've wanted to do this for him, but he wants to do the 4 hour course where he gets the training and then does 8 laps on his own  and driving with him now is already unbearable.

You could probably ask at the desk of AKL and they will tell you how to get there, or just take a cab. Whenever we take a cab, we call down first to see if they ahve some sitting there, (they always do) and tell them we'll be right down. If there aren't any cabs waiting, they will get you one.

Please keep us inform of what you decide. I'd love to know how it turns out.

Cheesehead,

I would definitely suggest this for your DH. My son always wanted to do this. After several trips, we gave in and agreed to just the two-three laps (which still was pricey in my opinion). Keep in mind, he was about 17 when he did this. Both my kids are "huge, huge" NASCAR fans and this was a dream for him to do this. He absolutely loved it!!! It is probably the highlight for him of all our trips to WDW. He had his picture taken which is proudly framed in his bedroom. He even wanted to buy some old tires and have them shipped back home. What was the kid thinking? He thought we could take them as "luggage" on the plane! He will tell you it was worth every cent it cost!

As far as getting there, it's quite easy. Go to TTC and walk over to the Dog Kennel. There is an office there for the Driving Experience. They send a van right over to pick you up and take you to the track. There is a small place to buy souvenir's, etc.

Even though I did not do this, I was thrilled just to know I was standing on an official NASCAR track (Mom's a fan too!) It was great watching him get one of his dreams fufilled.

Have you read the experience reports on this at AllEarsNet? Richard Petty Driving Experience (http://www.allearsnet.com/btp/petty.htm) Everyone who has experienced it has raved about the experience. I think your husband will be touched and delighted by this special opportunity!

I went with my friend to watch him drive the cars. It was his b-day present. He loved it. I am sure your DH would love it. The ride-along is only an hour I think, so it wont take much time. If you get him the 8-lap, where he drives, its around 3hours. That is what my friend did. I swear they were only doing 6-7 laps, but I wasnt counting. Anyway, its definitley pricey, but you wont regret it all. If you can swing it, I say go for it:-)
