According to Screamscape:
2008 to 2009 - Space Mountain: Mission 2 - Rumor - (1/11/08) Screamscape sources tell us that while the lengthy planned rehab of Space Mountain is still on the way, there is a good chance right now that they will wait until after Toy Story Mania opens before shutting Space Mountain down. Since we’re talking about a very length shutdown, anywhere from 12-18 months, this has a large number of people concerned and very anxious because it could mean that Space Mountain would be down not only for Summer 2008, but could possibly be down for some or all of Summer 2009. From the sound of things, Imagineering is ready to go and would like to begin work as soon as possible, but Disney World management is the troublesome one dragging their feet, as they don’t believe it to be a priority.

Didnt disneyland go down for a long time like that. They made the ride so much better too!! Side by side seating and a great sound system on the ride and I heard track replace. Maybe thats what WDW is getting? If so that is so worth it!! The ride is so much smoother at Disneyland too.

The full article implied to me that it would be a MAJOR uprgrade ala Disneyland. To me that says they aren't just fixing up the old ride, but virtually building a new one inside.
After all, I don't think most of these attractions take a more than a year to build from the ground up. So if they are taking that much time, carefully rebuilding the a new version, without destroying the original structure in the process.
When you stop think about it, there are some major upgrades in the MK going on. First was the big IASW rehab, then the new and improved HM which was definitely worth the wait. Now it seems SM could be next.

SM is due for a rehab. The last time we were on it, it felt as rickety as a carnival ride. DH refuses to go on it anymore since it is so jerky. I went on SM in Disneyland Paris, and I loved it! It had the same start at Rockin' Roller Coaster. I don't think they could that since it would involve exterior changes as well, but something like the DL in Ca would be an improvement.

That ride hurts my back like no other--to the point I can't ride it anymore.
Do a launch start like RnR!!!

I don't know if they have room to do a launch. SM in DLP is very cool to watch, as the launch goes up the outside of the roof and then drops you in the top. Your 'ship' is fired from a gun toward the moon.
I hope they leave the windows from the TTA unblocked like they normally do during rehabs. Imagine the constant buzz as people keep reporting on the lastest rehab news.

Disneyland survived the major rehab of Space Moutain and Matterhorn and the park is soooo much better for it. Considering Space dates back to the mid 70's, I think a re-do is much overdue. Yeah, it would be a bummer to be there and miss it, but then it just gives you another excuse to come back! :D
As for right now, the track on Space is better at World, but the sound system and cars are so much better at Disneyland. IMHO.

I don't know if this is the same as the Disneyland version, but someone did a recreation of the DLP version of Space Mountain: Mission 2 with RCT.
The first 'pause' in the launch from the 'barrel' which is on the outside of SM's roof and then drops you in the top.

Sounds like they might be converting to a mission 2 as in DLP. We rode it and it rocks! They definitely put the ride on steroids. Maybe the will be using the real estate from the cable-carts for the launch area....
