Beignets 6a
Wednesday Morning - had breakfast at hotel, 8:30 the van picked us up and took us to the Avenue Plaza Hotel/timeshare place it was great had a cup of tea waited a minute or two and Greg took us into a little room told us we were the first ones for their company to be given the bottom line first lol no tour no pressure do you want to buy or not heres what it will cost you heres where you can go our answer was no we were out the door in less than 15 minutes whew!!!! We were dropped off at the D-Day Museum, which is near the hotel. We went into the museum and saw the first floor, also a ceremony was being conducted, where a representative from a past war for each branch of the service, along with their family, came up to the podium, shook hands with the governor of Louisiana and was finally handed long past due medals they should have received years ago. WWII through Desert Storm - not many dry eyes in the audience I held tight the damp tissue in my hand and we walked out of the museum with our hearts full of pride for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and our spirits soared with new found joy and happiness for those who were finally recognized.
We walked a few blocks to the hotel to be picked up by the Swamp Van at 1:00. Scamp found a girl to talk to in the back of the van and thats where he stayed for the journey Tramp and I sat up front watching the scenery of the surrounding area. When the van pulled up to the Cypress Swamp, Tramp went into the gift shop to purchase a ticket for son it would be $39.00, we had only won two tickets.
I was the keeper of receipts on the trip we kept a tally of what the vacation was costing us there was only so much allotted for the week - Tramp handed me the receipt and it was $22.00!!!! They did not charge son for the transportation just the cost of the swamp ticket - So a tour that would have cost us $120.00 only cost $22.00!!!! and we did not need the $80 for the car rental to drive to the Swamp place ourselves.
Im figuring the $26.00 with coupon to get us all on the steamboat was a good investment and filling out the form for the drawing saved us over $200.00. This is a good day!
Before we boarded the boat that would take us deep into the swamps of Louisiana I held a baby alligator what a darling little thing he was he looked right at me and gave me the cutest little look - felt like sticking him in my bag but, just as the thought traversed my mind, the little darling dug in a bit and began squiggling. Smiling, I stretched my arms out and gave the cute little critter back to the handler. I did share with the handler of the time my brother went to a circus and came home with a baby gator - which he kept in the bathtub!
The tour was a fun time -. they had beer, soda and chips on board the captain would ask you where you are from as you stepped onto the boat and would make a few jokes at some of the people. When I mentioned North Carolina he said he would not be bringing me back- will feed me to the gators due to the Panthers being a rival team of their Saints. It was all in fun many chuckled.
Bayou Segnette is the gateway to the Barataria- Terrebonne Estuary and many an alligator rules there, sliding confidently through the murky water. Great Blue Herons and Egrets fish silently off the banks. Snakes and turtles bask lazily in the sun and Cypress trees loom mysteriously on the horizon as Cajun shrimp boats idle by with their nets strung high and every now and then you catch a nutria (giant rat) along the banks watching you.
We could be dropped off anywhere we wanted so we asked for Cafι de Monde it was Wednesday only two days left and we still had not tried the famous beignets dont know where our brains were having free ham and cheese omelets, Creole omelets every morning at the hotel. Wowzers I was in heaven we should have eaten here every morning drat!!! The beignets are excellent with a cup of Cafι au Lait we devoured the first beignet - listened to our arteries and then bit into the second one. You get a plate of three we drank our coffee and enjoyed the atmosphere a small band was playing off in the corner and pigeons were building snowmen in the powdered sugar that fell to the ground with each bite from the humans above. This should be the first place you go upon landing in New Orleans do not wait til the end of your visit!! cafedumonde.com
We walked up Decatur to Margaritaville we were going to spend the night in there having dinner but it got changed twice lol so I said at least lets get a drink and look in the shop. We browsed the shop first which is around the corner from the restaurant/bar we left with one purchase, a bumper sticker that states Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, New Orleans, it is still sitting in the bag in my suitcase. We moved over to the bar and we all thought the same instead of tropical palms and Red Scarlet Ibis, we had the feeling of dead trees and vampire bats youve heard of a hole in the wall well this was one of them now, it was fun the drinks were tasty I had a Bahama Mama and Buffet tunes were playing in between the live band sets. A server walked by and mentioned that our son would have to move into the other room the restaurant area, so we poured our drinks in To Go Cups and started walking to The Bottom of the Tea Cup on Royal Street to see about having my tea leaves read.
If I had $35.00 for ten minutes I would know my future I already knew my future, it was saying thank you and heading back out the door - we let the door gently close as we stepped back outside yikes!!
Next stop was the Harley Davidson Store I had promised a T-shirt to a co-worker back home who had given me rides into work when my head gasket in my car went then the ice storms hit I was driven back and forth for two weeks by this very kind person. It was my first time in a HD Store looked through some of the racks, I knew the one I wanted as I had seen it on their online shop on the internet ahhh there it was I looked at the price tag yikes and paid the man at the counter he let us out as the door sticks and you need to either push or pull it with difficulty. One of the things we enjoyed doing that didnt cost anything was walking up and down the various streets we were now on Royal and it was fun to just peek in the various shops as we made our way down the street. We had done the same on Bourbon and Decatur and a few others that I cannot spell at the moment without the street map of New Orleans, which is still in my suitcase.
Walked a block towards the hotel and realized the time was now 6.00 The dinner meet is at 7 out in the suburbs ackkk get a cab quick!!!! We spotted one across the street and grabbed the first one in line no one was in it the cab driver was sitting in the back seat of another cab with three other cab drivers they were smoking Fare Flags should have popped up on more than the cab but they didnt and so we hopped in we were in a hurry Tramp sat in the front seat and off we went the cab driver started driving away from the hotel in the opposite direction going to the most congested streets following the horse and buggy tours Tramp said, hey what are you up to the hotel is the other way cab driver did not answer Tramp he then turned and started going towards the hotel and he could have went straight our hotel was right there but he turned on a street under construction and then was going to drive about three more blocks away from the hotel and take us around the casino this was just nuts again Tramp told the guy we know where the hotel is the cab driver then slammed on his breaks swerved over to the side of the road and lit into us unreal he has lived here all his life, how dare we tell him how to drive we knew better, it was about the fourth cab we had been in during our visit we knew what the fare should be this guy was taking us for a ride Tramp threw the money at him with a few words and we walked the rest of the way! We need the quickest way to Dragos as we rounded the corner to the hotel and we still had not changed for dinner!! Next chapter is why cant I just twitch my nose and get us there? It is 6:30 - Hurry Up!!!!
