Hi guys:

All day yesterday I had trouble getting online with mylocal online phone number. There's only ONE phone number to use locally - all others are in surrounding towns which would be a local long distance charge per minute and costs lots to use espeically when I get onto this site and start posting.

I know most of you have cable or other systems for the computer which is faster. Our dial-up system also keeps me from getting phone calls when I'm on and therefore, I can't always make the late night chats if I've been on an hour or more already. (I do have voice mail so when I finally get offline I can check the calls but when my kids are calling from WA or Louisiana I hate to miss the calls).

Is it worth the money to use any service other then dial-up. I currently pay $21 per month for earthlink and I think our local cable company - Comcast - would be close to $50 a month. But, I could still talk on the phone and leave the computer on.

Pros/cons?

We wrestled with this issue about 9 months ago, Clarie. After looking at the cost for a second line vs DSL it looked to be about the same. So we decided to go with earthlink (which I love) DSL. It just made better sense because I spend a lot of time on the internet, and I love to talk on the phone too!

Now I will warn you that it is very tempting to be on line and talk on the phone at the same time -- so the issue of tying up the phone line can still exist!

And on a side note -- I would contact earthlink about what happened last yesterday with your local number, see if they have any deals on DSL or if it is even offered in your area, and if they are willing to compensate for the local number being unusable yesterday.

We also have DSL, for much the same reasons as BetsyAnn said above. I really love it for the speed that we can access the net and get downloads and such taken care of. (Remember that I do a fair amount of consulting from my home though, and databases do take a lot of bandwidth when sending them back and forth.) I think the convenience of being able to use the phone at the same time everyone else is on the internet is a big plus.
