Backing Up Files

I dropped my laptop when at the Polynesian in January and it cracked the case. Now the ports don't always work all the time.

So I'm taking it in for repair, it's covered as I bought the accidental insurance.

My question is: Is there an easier way to back up word documents and excel files without having to do each one individually?

I also have many photos downloaded to the laptop, how do I back them up?

I don't want to lose anything ! :roll:

Good morning Deb! You just can't keep from dropping that laptop can ya? LOL :wink: I don't know the answer to your questions, but I thought I'd tease ya a little this morning!

My guess is, you have to back up word documents and spreadsheets seperately because you name them each something different when you save them.

Sorry to hear about the laptop problems.

Do you have a CD-Rom burner? Is your computer on a local network that you can copy files to another computer?

Depending on how many files you have, copying to floppy disk could take a LONG time and lots of disks.

As to finding the files:

If you have all the Word and Excel files spread across your computer like I do, a Search might help.

In explorer select the search option and then do a full system search on "*.doc,*.xls" (and any other file extensions that you want to find).

When it is complete you will have all the Word DOC files and Excel XLS files in one list. Then you can copy them to CDROM, floppy, or to another computer on your network.

You could do the same thing to locate all image files (*.jpg, *.gif, *.jpeg - are the typical extensions for most images, but there are others)

You might want to talk to the service people where you are taking the computer to ask if they have any other suggestions as well.

There are also some good system backup programs out there (not that I use any :roll: ) that could help you out as well.

One more tip--you can back up whole folders. So if all of your photos are in folders under "My Pictures", you only have to do one move. Still takes the same amount of waiting, though.

I decided the $72.00 Gateway would charge to back everything up was well worth it.. lol.. less stress that way..

I also got a really cool Mother's Day present.. a brand spanking new PC!
700XL with the 19" flat screen monitor... it's got two dvd/cd drives too!
funny how these days you have to pay an extra $20 for a floppy drive.. lol.. floppys have gone way of the music cassettes..

so my laptop is in the shop.. and the pc isn't delivering until next week..

but the bestest news is .. who cares!

cause I'm heading to Disney World this weekend!

My laptop was returned yesterday!

All new guts too... everything was reformatted.. and the top even closes!

Today.. they delivered the new PC!

I'm supposed to be packing for WDW.. but am eyeing the three cow boxes instead.. lol..

We also got a new Canon digital camcorder.. but that is LoriBeth's territory.. me.. I'll stick to the digital still shots..

Two sleepies!!!! and we are back home in WDW again!
