View Full Version : Festival of the Lion King
Here are some FotLK shots I took back in December. I've taken shots of the show several times in the past and was never happy with the results. This time my technique and equipment all came together and I got results that I'm happy with.

Incredible, just incredible! Those are not easy shots to get with such a fast moving show. Thank you for posting them and welcome to the site! :napkin:

Beautiful Mark! That is my favorite show and I can never get good pictures there. I can get ok night shots and ok action shots, but never the two combined. This is a typical FotLK photo for me!

Those pictures are wonderful. The fire shots are amazing.
Just how did you get such great shots - every once in a while I get a good shot but nothing to match your quality.
Thanks for sharing!

Great shots! The fire ones are especially great.
Barrie I sort of like yours too but I like monochromatic abstract art.

Welcome to Tagrel, Mark!!
Just curious, what equipment do you have/use? And, more specifically what did you use for the FotLK pics (camera & lenses) and roughly what settings?

I used a Canon 1D Mark II and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens. Most of the shots were taken at ISO 1600 and an f/2.8 aperture. The shutter speeds tended to be between 1/50 and 1/200. A few of the fire shots were taken with an ISO of about 400.
While balance was a real problem (as you can tell) because so many different colored lights were used and they kept changing. In some cases I tried to adjust white balance by assuming that something in the scene was neutral colored. In other cases I just left it as shot in auto-white balance mode.
I shot in aperture priority and metered in evaluative metering mode (I think that's matrix on a Nikon).
On one fire shot, I popped the aperture up to f/13 to get a longer shutter speed (1/4) to get a trail of fire.
and Can I get copies for my scrapbook?
Any of you are free to use any of my Disney pictures for your scrapbooks. You can find bunches of them over at my smugmug site (http://barbieri.smugmug.com/Travel/47288). I post most of them in full resolution, so you can download them and print them yourself or just order prints from Smugmug. They charge for printing and shipping, but downloading the original sized photos is free.
If you ever need help finding or downloading a photo, just let me know and I'll be glad to help. I find it flattering to hear from people that are using my photos, but it's not really necessary to ask.
If you want a quick view of my movies (and you have a Windows computer), you can download one of my Disney slideshows at http://barbierifamily.org/slideshow/

These are amazing shots. With my camera there is barely enough light for an mediocre quality wide shots.
What I love the most, is now I can leisurely take in all the details in the costumes. I never realized how much I didn't notice because I'm taking in to much at once.

That is JUST what I thought when I saw them! And i've probably seen that show 40 times.

This is the exact type of information I was hoping for with this forum! GREAT pictures and how to get them! :peri: thanks Mark - your shots are outstanding! Did you use a tripod as well?
I think I'm officially starting my 'get a digital SLR fund...' I just can't get the shots I want until I have a grown up camera! Hmmm... wonder how much of the household budget I can detour into my new fund...
Did you use a tripod as well?
No. I'm too lazy to lug a tripod around WDW. A monopod would have been a big help with the one long exposure shot I took. Most of the rest were fine with just using an image stabilized lens.
Remember that a tripod or image stabilization won't help at all with things that move too fast. You'll notice, for example, that I don't have good shots of the monkeys doing their routine. For things like that, you need a higher ISO and a wider aperture to get the highest possible shutter speed.
If I had to give one piece of advice for getting good FotLK shots with any camera, it would be to try to shoot when their is the least movement. Time your shots to match when the performers pause for a moment.

When I think about it, all my FoTLK shots are much wider shots. I don't think I've ever thought to try a closeup.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful pictures and for tips on getting them. I will never have a camera that can take shots like that and even if I did I would have to take courses in how to use it properly.
