I was wondering if anyone knew what was so special about the first week of May for those traveling to Florida??

I wasn't sure if I should post here or the travel page but I'm trying to book a flight for me, DH and DD to go down May 1 and return May 8. I was hoping to get in on Southwest Airlines $79 each way deal only to find out that the first week of May is blocked out from the deal and the price for that week is $183 each way (non-stop flight).

I like Southwest and I like no lay-overs but it doesn't look like it will work out if I have to blow my whole budget on airfare. I planned for the first week of May because its after Spring Break rush and before the summer rush... can't change it now because my husband's work isn't flexible and he had to put in for that week LAST April!!

So basically, I have two questions...

1) What is going on that first week of May?
2) Any other ideas on keeping to budget on my flight (please don't suggest drive...my husband and I fight over who gets stuck driving because we both hate it -- so driving to Florida from Massachusetts would be pure torture!)

THANKS!!!

Maria

Hey Maria!

Well, here are a coupld of thoughts:

Why so busy the first week of May? Well, at Disney, they will be in full swing with their Flower and Garden Festival as well as May 1&2 will host the inline skating marathon. Another reason is that there may still be some late spring-breakers or early high-school grads. Other than that, I'm not sure what would cause the airline to have blackout dates.

Budget Air Travel: Well, I usually fly American to WDW (from Seattle) when I want a really good rate (can usually get a rt rate of $202 - 240). During Christmas, though, we flew Frontier Airlines in order to get teh cheapest rate (by about $100 RT). I usually keep my eye on travelocity.com or orbitz.com for rates. I have found that I can find the best rates at about the 2-month mark.

Good Luck!

JetBlue has just started flying out of Boston. Here's the link in case you want to check their site to see what kind of deals they have:
