Is anyone here on myspace? Just a random thing that takes up my free time that I thought I was way too old for, until I found many of my friends and some family!

I am too old to be on there. I just feel any guy older than 30 on there is a potential subject for a "DatelineNBC" piece. :o

I felt the same way as you, but my even-older best friend got me into it. Now, it's the easiest and most fun way I keep in touch with several friends and even my brother in California! :)

I kept getting too many indecent proposals so I closed my account  It got to the point I felt guilty even opening my mail... and I didn't even do anything!

I'm on my space - I keep it private, and all you see is a picture of me, Sully and Ashley. I have stops on my profile so I get no e-mail traffic unless I approve it. I'm on it because my kids are and so are their friends - it's a way to keep in touch with all these people far from home!

I joined it just to be able to keep in touch with my nephew, I have not even filled out all that profile stuff. I just wanted to be able to write my nephew a few messages, I dont even know how it really works.

Careful...and this applies mostly to the teens...but many teens know how to hack into the private sites. It's evidently not that hard. I don't know how but there was a presentation at school last year about it and the presentor told the kids he figured it out. They weren't so sure, so they asked the "smartest" kid in the class - yup, sure enough it's pretty easy.
In any case, what you THINK is private, is really not hard to crack.

We just keep up with email and I'm fortunate I have a computer geek for a husband, so we have a web site.

It is blocked by our filter-comes up as dating!-and we don't allow our kids to use that site. DD not happy as one of her friends has an account on there, but too bad!!! I've heard some scary stories about what is on myspace!
If email isn't enough, and the MSN that we just allowed not that long ago (I think dd was 17...) there is always the phone!
Too many ways to get into trouble that you didn't even know existed on the internet...

We absolutely do not allow our kids to have a MySpace account either. WAYYY to dangerous for them.
First, they all lie about thier age on it. Not a huge deal if you say you are 15 instead of 13. But I have seen girls who are 14 and say they are 18 and put pics of themselves up where they really DO look 18. That creates problems when guys who ARE 18 or 20 want to meet them THINKING THEY really are also 18.....
Second, the things kids say and post on there - HOLY COW!!! Nice kids that we know shock us with thier MySpace sites. The "potty mouths" (or should I say potty fingers since they type the words?) they have is unreal.
Third, the whole private thing. It really isn't.
Fourth, the same speaker I told you about - created a fake profile for himself, made him the most scary person he could think of - just out of jail, no job, weird interests, etc., and in his 20's. Then asked to be invited into the circle of friends of teenage girls - some he knew and some just random. Not one turned him down. The ones he knew are from the private boarding school he works at - and they had just gone through a presentation about internet safety.
In addition, this stuff is public. Employers and sometimes top colleges are searching the internet and also archiving the internet at any given time. And then going back and searching to see what was there about you in the past. These things CAN and DO come back to haunt you.
Lastly, like Susan said, we do allow MSN messenger (not AOL though), they have email and there is always the phone.

Ok, that's my soap box.....I'll climb down now...sorry for the rant.

i use myspace to promote my music. www.myspace.com/sammiegoddard (http://www.myspace.com/sammiegoddard) or www.myspace.com/angeliduo (http://www.myspace.com/angeliduo)

I love it. It has put me in touch with some great musicians and singers... as a marketing tool its amazing.

And I, too, did it originally to watch what my kids were doing. But little nosy Amanda blew the whistle on me, so I had to go public and admit to having a myspace. My myspace is private, too, which I know, like most things, can be broken into if someone really wants to. But, since I know that I am not posting porn (nor would anyone care to see me in any photos like that ;) ), I really don't care if anyone who works hard enough hacks in. There is nothing that I am posting to be ashamed of. And I, too, use it to keep up with some friends across the country, and to recieve information on upcoming shows from some of our favorite musical acts.

My myspace is also difficult to find because I am not listed under my name. So unless I invite you to be my friend, you probably would not be able to find me.

There are pedophiles everywhere. There are child molesters everywhere. Myspace is not a haven for these people. It is just in the national spotlight at the moment because it is getting the blame for parents not monitoring their kids behavior and then wanting to put the blame on something.

Parents, if you are reading this and your kids have a myspace, make sure they keep their profile private and that you have complete access to it, and make sure that they understand that if, at any time you don't like what's going on, you will pull the plug. Hopefully, this will keep things flowing nicely.

EXACTLY! I think my point is more that I have seen some myspace pages of kids that I would consider "good kids" and have been SHOCKED at what was there. Between 14 year olds saying they are 19 and putting pics up that make them look like they are (never a good thing), the 16 year olds saying they like to "dance slutty," dropping the f-bomb every other sentence in messages, and simply things that I know thier parents would be appauled at. One kids said of his hobby "if you don't like it, you can go 'bleep yourself." He was 12. I asked him what I could do if I didn't like his hobby. He just laughed and said it was a joke. I have one friend who monitors her neices (mom is not a computer person) and has said, the minute she is off the friends list, or there is something inappropriate on there, she's done.
