my 10 yr old Persian has both of his back legs paralyzed..we went to bed, he was fine. got up in the morning and his hind legs don't work...i know he can urinate, don't know about the other and he is scooting around, doesn't appear to be in pain. i thought maybe a stroke but the limited info i could find online doesn't appear to fit that..have to take him to the vet this pm but considering i just had one of my other cats die Monday ( old age ) 2 in one week is 2 to many. i don't think he fell or anything( not much of a jumper) and don't see anything that could have fallen on him or hurt him, no poisions or anything he could have gotten into...my vet just is the "spend a mint and he dies anyway" type and i really do not have a ton of money to spend on mris etc now.so i wondered if anyone had ever heard of anything like that before...he seemed healthy before, 10 yrs old so not ancient.

Happened to our cat in Germany. Rushed him to the German vet. He gave him a muscle relaxer and held him up by the scruff of the neck - this was not a small cat - 18 pounds - anyway, held him up by the scruff of the neck and kinda shook him while he felt down his spine. Gave us some more muscle relaxes which we were to give him for a couple days while he rested. Apparently he had a slipped disk?

Consider a vet who performs accupuncture. When I was a teenager, our dog became paralyzed in the back end, from a slipped disk. The vet used accupuncture treatments, and he walked again almost normally after that.

I hope your kitty is OK. Like you said, two in two weeks is too many.

It may be somthing as simple as a pinched nerve. I would asume that a slipped disk would cause some pain. One of my cats had this happen when she was a kitten and it is very common. If it is a pinched nerve all your kitty will need is an anti-inflamatory shot and some muscle relaxers.
Can he feel anything in his back legs or pads? If so it's probably just a pinched nerve or slipped disk as others have suggested.

thanks i'll have hubby check if he can feel his back paws when he gives him a bath pre-vet...he adores hub so he wouldn't nip him even if it hurt..me not so much .. litter box is not working so don't what how to keep him from laying in urine maybe chux pads would help..this at least gives me so hope as i was thinking we'd probably have to have him put to sleep.

well he died before the vet could see him...that makes me wonder since he was good pals and slept with the other one who supposedly died of old age( actually the vet thought older cat just needed some antibiotics and would be fine but then when he died thought it was due to his old age...i don't think anything was weird with his blood work or anything)

guess i'll toss everything they used since i dont really want to lose our last one..it's weird cause they have all their shots, never go outside.. their symptoms weren't the same( the older one never got paralysed or anything, just had been losing weight and laying around . he got an ear infection
which is why the dr gave him the antibiotics and thought that would fix him up but said if not his weight loss might be his thyroid....then he died and tommy ( the younger) started but just started with the legs not working..neither acted like they were in pain or anything...both seemed to be going to the bathroom ok but not eating much. both were on urinary tract food as we lost a cat to that once and i didn't want it to happen again and we never changed their diet due to that. hmmm...very weird

I'm so sorry about the loss of your cats. It does seem odd they both died so closely together. I wonder if it's possible the second cat had a stroke or something similiar. Just in case they did have some kind of virus, it's smart to toss their stuff out just to be on the safe side.

After reading about the second cat, I started to wonder. Has there been any work done around the house, have then gotten into the basement or something where they might have eaten something they shouldn't have?

Jann, From one Persian owner to another, I am sending sincere condolances to you and the family for your loss'. May your hearts be filled once more with the pitter patter of tiny fur balls, soon. Hopefully, your third kitty will be fine and welcome some new additions after a while.

thanks all for the condolences, that's very kind of you.

...i wondered if they could have ingested something but looked and found nothing there...we try to use non toxic stuff as a rule and anything the least dangerous we have locked in the shed outside, they can't get into my laundry stuff and no open bottles etc laying around

...my daughter works for an equine hosp. but the vets have training with small animals naturally and i think i'll have her ask if anything stand out as something that had both set of sypmtoms to them, mainly so i know what to look for with kitty # 3 although she is more of the loner and not really close/ cuddly to them. just very odd set of events when they've always been healthy.

this is the second Persian i had die...do you know if they usually are more susceptible to illnesses? our first was a runt from a breeder and i thought maybe that was why( vet never really gave a cause, thought maybe urinary tract blockage but he was on Iams urinary at the time, with the first Persian( Cyrus) we had been away and he was really sick by the time we got home, i guess cats hide their illnesses and a house sitter probably wouldn't catch on something was up till late in the game) but this one was not a runt, i mean he was 10, not like the other who was 5 when he died but i just thought it was odd...out of all the other cats we've had the only ones who have died like this( ie sickness) have been purebreds, our other cat that died was Siamese although he was getting up there (14, i think that is like 70 or so in human age). our last "mutt" cat that died died due to anesthesia during surgery so not due to ill health and he was older also. this just kind of stinks:( and it makes me nervous. i don't even know if it would help taking the remaining cat to the vet since considering what they thought the first one had, would they even recognize what it was?

i was just doing more online browsing and i came up with feline infection peritonitis...it can start off like a cold and can have neurological symptims and wasting....and felix( siamese) had runny eyes and looked like he had a cold a few weeks before we went on vacation...when we got back he had lost weight and was laying around and i wondered if he had cancer or something. then he got the ear infection and died. tommy was sneezing afew weeks ago and i thought it was due to the dust ( we heat with wood and had just started using the wood stove) since he loved to lay any palce dirty( why he always needed baths...a white persian who loved to lay anywhere it was filthydusty, dirty or any thing that would make him dirty ) i guess the only good thing would be basically there is nothing you can do about it once they get it...i wonder if it is like lukemia where you can bring it home on shoes etc since there has been a few strays hanging around our barn. well husband is bleach water cleaning everything in the basement now so hopefully sabrina won't get it if that is what it is

Did you ask the housesitter if she brought anything in with her that the cats could have possibly gotten into? Make sure they understand you don't hold them responsible, but simply want to ensure there isn't anything around that could possibly hurt another cat.

Are there any new plants in the house? Here's a list of quite a few common plants that are toxic to cats.

ETA: I found this on another site when I googled 'cat paralyzed hind legs'.

Another complication of heart disease in cats is the development of a blood clot, clinically known as aortic thromboembolism, which usually forms in the heart and travels through the blood stream. Most commonly, the clot lodges at the branch of the aorta that feeds the back legs, shutting down blood flow and causing partial or complete paralysis.

ETA again: Persians can be predisposed for heart disease.

nope he died...

i did see about the blood clot issues and another mentioned cardiomyopathy which could be , i'm mainly concerned about it being contagious for cat number 3 since i can't do anything about the other 2 now.

not to complain but since mid july we have had older daughter go through very bad bout with clinical depression, her husband file for divorce ( doesn't want to deal with her depression which is hard to deal with), she came very close to suicide and so hospitalized for it, i had a blood clot( chronic vascular problems)& cellulitis so had to stay off my feet for a few weeks, younger daughter lost her job( her sister called or emailed her too many times for the month and1/2 she was really bad so they fired younger daughter who always gave them 110%, no notice, no warning:mad: after 7 yrs, such nice guys:shock: ), and now 2 cats die....enough already!:yikes:  not a 3 month period i want to repeat anytime soon:rolleyes:

Don't know if this will have any significance for you ...

My sister (a vet tech) said that lysol and swiffer wet jet can be toxic to cats. I don't know if anything like that was around them...

So sorry you're having to worry about this.

The Wet Jet is a scam. Snopes.com is a great place to find out what's a scam. I've been usig a wet jet for 5 years ad my cats are just as crazy as wvbefore I started. ;)

SO sorry about your furbaby. :sad hug:
