From another board I read that disney no longer takes personal checks for merchandise at WDW locations. Has anyone else heard this.

I was always surprised that Disney took personal checks to begin with.
One day I was over at the World of Disney store and this guy in front of me was buying one of those water globes and a few other pricey items.
The girl rings up the sale and he gets a check out of his pocket and unfolds it and starts to write in the check.
He asks the girl if he can write the check for an extra $50 and at first she said yes and then took the license he had and the check to a back room.
As she was walking away, the guy starts fidgeting and getting nervous and claims to suddenly need a bathroom! :-o
Turns out the check was stolen, the ID was stolen and now half the security is on the hunt for this guy running through the store!!!
This was about a year or so ago and back then there was always that talk that the check privaleges would end as so many were coming back on WDW as unpaid. They won't even take a debit card unless you can use it as a charge card.

Growing up in NY, except for certain large purchases (like furniture or an appliance) I don't remember stores accepting checks. I was a surprise when I moved to So Cal and checks were commonly used to pay for groceries. I remember having to guess-timate how much I had in groceries, so I'd be sure I had enough cash.
Disney should have a way to accomadate those guests who don't have credit cards. Allowing them to send extra money when paying off their room bills, would give them additional 'credit' on their room keys.

Whats a check? I don't think I have even seen the checkbook in probably 2.5 years. With on-line bill payer and Mastercard/Visa check cards who needs checks?

EXACTLY!!!!:D
We use our Disney Visa for EVERYTHING we can and then pay the bill online at the end of the month!! That way I can get LOTS of Disney Dollars for our trips!!:D
I have to say...the only thing I write checks for now are kids activities, and the water and sewer bills...That's it!!!:)

My mom wanted to write a check at a hotel we went to recently and I told her there was no way they'd accept it. She insisted but found out that I was right. She went on and on about how it was ridiculous that they don't accept checks. I would never think to use a check to pay for a hotel room. Usually they want your credit card number in case they discover something happened in the room and they need to charge for damages (this is why you should never use a debit card to pay for a room since the money will be taken directly out of your bank account).

It was safe for them to accept it for deposits and such, because the check would clear long before the service was received.
Back when I first started working after high school I worked for a camera store that accepted checks. Ever check had to be processed in the office. We required 2 pieces of ID and would actually call the back to verify there were funds to cover the check in the account.

The last time I ordered new checks from the bank had to be in 2001
I just change the address on the front of the check if I ever have to write one until I use them all up, which at this rate could take another couple years!

I use my debit/credit card for lots of thing now. But I did write a check to the vet the other day and I always use to write checks for groceries, now I slide my card and be done with it. Sometimes it's nice to have a written record of a transaction. The first place I ever encountered that no cash was accepted and only select credit cards or debit cards was Costco when you buy gas. Otherwise we can write checks to our heart's content. What irks me is you can't charge tuition. Imagine the miles you'd rack up if you could do that.:yowsa: If anyone can figure out a way around that let me know.

We were able to charge DD's tuition at UNC-Wilmington. Great mileage booster. Emory, however, was another story - that would have made for a free ticket each semester.
We use a credit card for virtually every thing we purchase and the statement provides a record of where our money goes. We pay it off every month, so there are no finance charges.

I pay the babysitter every week with a check and the Avon lady gets a check. Other than that, I rarely write checks unless I have to send someone money through the mail. It'll probably take me 10 years to use up my current box.

Cruey,
Back when I was at college at Northeastern Univ. in Boston (when dinosaurs used to wander down Commonwealth Ave.) we were allowed to pay tuition with credit cards. I seem to remember way back then there was sort of an uproar and a lot of general criticism about the practice: poor starving college students running up 18% interest on their tuition.
Them were the days...

I have to laugh at this because I live in a town of about 50,000 with 3 colleges. you can write a check in this town for ANYTHING!!! And I mean, anything. Before McDonalds took credit cards, you guessed it, you could write a check. You can write checks for gas, for groceries, for food at any restaurant in town including a lot of fast food ones. Even Subway.
When my DH and I were in college here 15 or so years ago, there were 3 drugstores in town that you could write a check in and get cash because of course there were no ATMs at all then. If the bookstore at college closed before you could get ther eon Friday, you could go to Sav-on-Drugs or AmeriDrugs and cash a check for up to $25. Isn't it funny how times have changed? I still find myself writing a bunch of checks every month and DH hardly ever writes any!

Yes, they do that. Last April I had prepaid my room and then later changed my reservation from a higher priced resort to POP. Disney left the credit on my room. I was able to charge things to the room and then they gave me cash back at check out for what was left over. You can also put money down at the front desk on your room account if you want to charge to the room but don't have a credit card.

We charged tuition at Indiana University, and IPFW (Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne - unfortunately I don't think Valpo had that policy and Ball State required a check transaction (even online) when paying tuition!
I write checks each payday for bills- there are only a few online places my Credit card goes. I so however write very few check other than that- only church offering or buying gift cards through the church script program.

When I first started to charge everythingto Disney Visa I was suprised at the bill but now I am use to it. I was paying that anyway just in various ways (cash, check). Now I don't carry hardly any cash and I only write a check for things I can't charge.
While on vacation over the summer, I used a traveler's check and the person looked at me like I was nuts! She didn't think anyone used THEM anymore. Well I have to admit a carry some with me just in case there are problems with credit card or it gets stolen. My friend had his credit card number stolen and he couldn't make any charges until they cleared it up. He was on vacation and it was the only $ he had!
I carry travelers checks (or is it cheques? ;) ), and cash them at the front desk before I leave for the day.
They (at least at Disney) are used to that.
