Has anyone painted tiles before?
Is there somewhere I can get plain tiles and tile paints etc.

Look out - Shell has a new project!!

Any and all tile help will be greatly appreciated

:D I have painted tiles before. Have also stenciled on them. It's just like painting on glass. I think I may still have a book around here, but it may take a bit to find it.

There are special paints you can use and then put the tiles in the oven to set the paint. Actually I used a kiln, but I figure you may not have one of those. If you want to come to Maine you can use mine. :D

I used paints that I had for my stained glass business, but I'm pretty sure there are paints at Michael's that can be used on glass and on porcelain tiles. I'm going there today and I'll look. I have some glass paints here that I'll read the labels and see if they can be used on porcelain.

Are you a decorative painter also? I have done a lot of dec painting and it's hard to do on porcelain. The surface is so smooth. I found it easier to stencil.

Its' been a long time since I've done this.....

The only tiles I have painted are the greenware at our local pottery store. I paint and they glaze and fire. I would check into a place like that :D

I just did a quick google for current info and there are several brands of enamel paints out there - easily found in craft stores - that you can use to paint on plain tiles that you purchase at the hardware store. Some require setting in the oven, others seem to set after the dry. I would think the former is better but I'm not up on the quality of the newer paint products.

I did use an enamel paint called pebeo Porcelaine. At the time I bought it was only available in Europe, so mine is in French, Italian, German, Arabic. Hmmmm no English anywhere. So I fired it in my kiln to set it for 35 minutes as the numbers in the instructions are the same in any language! It worked fine. Of course, that was at 1350 degrees. :D Your temp may vary.

Anyway - the same product is now sold at Micheal's - in English no less - and I would recommend it for you. I assume they have home oven fired setting now. :D

The suggestion to do your tiles at a local pottery is also good, but only it you plan to make all of the tiles there. You would have a hard time making the painted ones there, and then trying to fit them in with store bought ones as the size/depth/color with differ by quite a bit. (Assuming you plan on doing some plain and some painted.)

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse!

Thank you everyone for your tips and such : )
It's appreciated!

Here's what I'm thinking of at the moment. I have a cabinet that will cover the lighthouse but I can also position it elsewhere on the tiles : )

Shell,

Since these tiles will be on a backsplash, you can use the glass paint that is sold at Michaels!! :)
Seal the painting when you are finished with the painting so in case you ever need to clean them, the design will not wipe off! Clean up will be easy using Windex or Fantastic or something similar.

In case you decide you don't want to paint your own design, Home Depot and Home Depot EXPO has these painted tiles that are very easy to install.

Post pics of your finished project! :)

Dahling, I like both designs. If you use the lighthouse one, be sure to add a few seagulls, they always seem to be near a lighthouse. Have fun with your project!

What! Do you mean SEAGULLS are only by the ocean and lighthouses? Here I thought they were only in Utah!

Shell, I like your latest project. Sorry that I can't help because I've never done anything like that. I have gone to "Color Me Mine" and painted a couple of plates and had them fired.
