Okay guys. I posted a while back that I found an easier route to DW out of PA. I have received about 6 different opinions from neighbors on how to go. The one I was planning to use was taking 81 south out of south central PA into VA and picking up 50 and 17 and then continuing on 17 straight through to 95 south right above Richmond.

One neighbor told me there's lots of construction on 17 and I should not take that way. Anyone out there familiar with that route?

Neighbor's bright idea has me going dow 81 almost to Roanoke and then taking side streets to 77 and 26 and who knows where else and ending up in NC somewhere and then heading back east to find 95 again. By my calculations, that would add 3 1/2 hours to my trip.

So, unless I hear from someone out there that I should avoid 17 and 50 and then 17 to 95 near Richmond, that's my latest plan of attack.

Thanks for any help.

Claire, have you tried getting directions from MapQuest and the other routing websites? Many of them will warn you of construction and delays for the areas along your route. That might be the best place for you to get updated and current info. I also have a CD that I pop into my computer and it will give me the best route to take after it's checked on-line. So far, these have been fairly accurate for us.

Just my 2 cents, :) Good luck to you.

Claire,

Not sure about the construction problems on 17, but if that's true I could see how that would cause delays on that route. As I mentioned in an earlier post, we have taken that route of following 81 to 77 and then 26 to 95. We have never taken the "side streets" through Roanoke but remained on highways all the way (you pick up 77 somewhere south of Roanoke I believe). It looks longer on paper but it took us 16 hours and 15 minutes driving time going that way and 16-1/2 hours going the 17/50 way (that's leaving from Wilkes-Barre area, MM 165 on 81). If you want more info let me know -- I'll pull my old trip logs out and give you exact numbers, good hotels along the way, etc.
