I just fell into a new hobby recently: Making Anglican/Ecumenical Rosaries and chaplets.

Some call them rosaries, some call them prayer beads, but whatever you call them, they are fun and very theraputic (for) me to make. More importantly, I feel as though I am making some sort of contribution to the prayer life of someone that may need help.

I have made them from wooden beads, plastic pony beads, metal beads, glass beads, and semi-precious stone beads.

So far, I have given away all that I have made... except for the first few which came out a bit off.

If anyone wants a set, please let me know.

Bill

P.S.: To have a look at the sort of thing I am talking about, have a look here: http://www.saintgabriels.org/rosary%20order.html

That sounds like lovely hobby Bill.

If you ever get to the point where you've given everyone you know a set, and still want to make more, might I suggest getting in touch with a chaplain at your local hospital.

I think for someone who's worried about their condition, and Christian (I'm not sure who else besides Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox religions who use Rosaries), they could be a comfort to them.

Greater and greater numbers of Episcopalians/Anglicans use them these days... Lutherans as well (we are Lutheran).

Try a Google search for Anglican Rosaries or for Ecumenical Rosaries.

I always wondered who made the beads they give away. Now I do.

I got a singlet from a Catholic website that gave them away. (those Anglican beads are different from Catholic rosaries) They're lovely. I took mine with me when I had to go to the hospital.

Well, who knew? I thought only Roman Catholics used rosaries...I'll be asking around at my Anglican church this Sunday-I've never heard of them nor have I ever heard them mentioned. Perhaps they are more in the High Anglican Church, of which ours is definitely not!

It's amazing the tidbits I learn on Disney sites!

I love the rosary's you make, Bill. Do you only make the Anglican type or would you consider making a Catholic one? I lost my rosary and have been using a finger rosary instead. I agree with Roodad, you are a complex man. Who wants to be run-of-the-mill anyway?;)

Cruey,

In the spirit of full disclosure (can you tell I work in Washington, DC with that caveat?) I have to tell you that I didn't make the ones in that link, my dear... I was just giving an example. However, mine look pretty much like those do, though.

As for your question, I would be glad to make one for you... PM me with your address, and give me about a week and I'll make one for you.

Thanks Bill, so it sounds like a "new" thing. I emailed both of our ministers and neither one had heard of them but both wouldn't have been surprised to find them in very High Anglican Churches-thinking they were more of a Catholic spinoff-but apparently this is a brand new thing, not a Catholic carryover.

Still not my style of prayer, but an interesting tidbit to file away nonetheless!!!

Thanks Bill, so it sounds like a "new" thing.

As much as I know, Sue... this all sprouted in the mid 80s... My knowledge of them is only a month or so oldd, but I have been making about two (or three) a week since then.

Thank you dahling for your kind offer. Check your PM's.

Ta ta, Cruey

Note to Susan, we always called Anglican "Catholic Lite" or "Catholic without the guilt". I went to some Anglican services in Chatham when I was in HS. The services are very similar to Catholic.

Cru lol
I've been in a High Anglican Church...had to check the name to make sure I hadn't walked into a Catholic one! Our church would scare those Anglicans away, I fear...what with the band up front, the hand waving, clapping, etc!!! The Reader's Digest version at 8:30am is still quite traditional though, but nowhere near what you've been to.

Oddly enough, I have heard the "Catholic-without-the-guilt" line used about Lutherans... funny how things get around.

An Anglican/Episcopalin friend once referred to himself as "catholic... just not Roman Catholic".

Bill dahling, Lutheran and Anglican are both so similar. Really, they are all a lot alike. There's also the Epicopalians too. All very similar. But... we Catholics play BINGO!!

HAHAHAH! True! True!

My mom spent a fair amount of BINGO nights at the local Knights when I was a kid.

P.S. Your first three decades are done...

Bill dahling! Thank you, thank you! It came today and it is beautiful! I took it to church and had it blessed before the Vigil started. I was able to say an entire rosary. The Easter Vigil lasted forever. We got there at 7:30 and it didn't end until 11:20pm. Our priest has to speed things up a bit. It was way too long.

When I can figure out how to post the picture I will. The picture doesn't do it justice. Everyone I showed it to loved it.

Thank you again from the bottom of my villainous heart. My new rosary will get a lot of use.

Hooraaaaay! I was hoping it would make it for Easter!

I was in such a hurry to get it in the mail, I closed the box before I could enclose the little note I had written for you... lol.

I'm glad you like it, Cruey... use it in good health.

My Bill, what a lovely hobby this has become for you. I was raised Catholic but became Lutheran before my daughter was born (my ex-husband was also Lutheran). I have remained Lutheran and my DH (Prince Charming) is Catholic. He comes to church with me now and then and admits that Lutheran and Catholic services/mass are almost exactly the same. I have never heard of Lutherans as "Catholic lite" but that seems about right. I HAVE heard that Lutherans are called the "chosen Frozen" as far as being very reserved during church (not too much hand waving or clapping or dancing in the aisles by any means but then we had none of that in the Catholic churches I attended either).

When I was small, my father would take a business trip now and then and his gift of choice for my mother when he returned was always a set of rosary beads. She gave one set each to my DD and DS (not to me though) of her "best" ones from my father (one was crystal and one was mother of pearl).

I wonder if I could get a set of the beads you make to bring to my mom on our next visit? She has advanced Alzheimer's now and lives in a nursing home in Maine but I'd like to try to give her a set when we are there and see if she lights up like she does when a memory comes back to her.

Please let me know what I must do to get a set.

Thank you so much.

Oh Bill - the rosary beads came today and they are BEAUTIFUL. I can't wait to bring them to my mom next visit to Maine. I don't want to mail them to the nursing home and have them disappear. They are really pretty purple beads and clear ones with designs inside. I will try to take a pic next time I'd down with the camera.
Thank you again so much.

Wow! That was quick, but I guess they didn't have to go very far.
