Hi

We're going to Charleston : ) :bounce: :bounce:
Where to stay? Inns and B&Bs
Where to eat? Moderate to Top of the Line
Best Season to go?
Must see sites and events?

I found some nice places to stay in town and on the beach.
Anyone from there or have you been there? What sections should we avoid?
Don't want to turn down the wrong street :yikes:

Any and all info. greatly appreciated.
Hugs Shell

I have been there a few times~ we love the carriage rides... but make sure to haggle the price, there's so many of them that we walk around and ask what's the best price.

I've stayed in hotels and b & b and I can't think of the names.

One was the Ashley house?? Yikes, can't recall.... one hotel was days inn down by the market. Wouldn't stay there again.
Last trip we stayed at Quality Inn?? By the war ship? IF that helps any??
My parents have stayed at the Anchorage.

The market place is fun~ but I would avoid the whole Charleston area in the heat of summer. So now is a great time. As a matter of fact, this time last year we went. It was perfect.

We also loved a restaurant called Sticky Fingers. :peri:

I haven't been to either of the Charleston's I know of, but I've been to Charlestown. Didn't think that would help you much though.

Thanks for your replies : )

PP - we've had dinner at Sticky Fingers - it is delicious! There's one over by Wilmington, NC :)

We're going in the Autumn Months when it's a bit cooler - I've heard you can still swim in November!

It's Tramp's 55th Birthday Present : )

I found a great site - a Charleston Forum - there are 23 pages - with 20 or so questions and answers on each page - spent hours last night pouring over the stuff lol Think I can be a tour guide now ;)

Opps...just saw this.. We stopped there a couple years ago for two nights at the end of October. We stayed at the French Quarter. Someone at the pool at the Dolphin recommended it. I procrastinated and called them late on our way there and got a great rate..probably because we were coming in late and maybe it was during the week. We had suite with... a pillow menu... I forget how many I requested to try out.. what fun. Anyhow, I forget the story here  but it was new with old ambience inside.. our room had high ceilings and a fire place. that was high on my list.. Oh, our location was dynamite.. I think I wanted to stay at the Planters Inn.... but maybe it was full ... I'm not sure why we didn't stay there..I generally like to check out places for the next visit but i don't remember if i did... manoman... i'm getting bad. I did like this place tho... I'd go back...;)

Besides walking around the town, we drove out to Magnolia Gardens... Many years ago, I had been to Boone Hall Plantation which i love... I'm not sure why we went here instead of Middleton or the others. there's so many to see and it's all cool. I prefer the plantations over the city homes because of the ambience of the trees I guess. Once I see one home in town I feel I"ve seen them all, but oh, the planations and gardens.. i so love.. Anyhow, we only had one day here so I really had to pick and chose..:(

Sorry but i dont' remember where we ate. John and i stopped on the street somewhere with nice white table cloths for chowder for lunch and for dinner, there was a place right close by the marina on the harbor.. My inlaws were there by boat which is why we went there. It was good tho...

:( We did not have time to get to ft sumter... I was annoyed with myself for procrastinating b/c some friends up north have their kids in college there. I met to ask them for dinner recommendations. Now, wouldn't that be cool to attend classes in old white buidlings with gingerbread and red geraniums in hanging baskets on the porches..

Wish I remembered more... OH, we did do a carriage ride.. first thing that morning. I always like to get a narrated tour of an area and i'd recommend one. I'll add more if I remember anything else.

Savannah, did you mention Savannah??? I soooo love that town.. You didnt' ask:lol: but we stay at the Foley Inn. It's right on Chippawa Square which is where Tom Hanks sat during Forest Gump. Make sure you watch Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil before you go.... It's a must do.. those people are either portraying themselves or other real folks. And it's not a spooky movie like the name implies... ok... just had to throw my two cents in here...

And I too would like the site Shell found for charleston.. I must not be a good searcher for I didn't find it before we went.

Sharon! Ohmygoodness, thanks so much!!! Love that movie and yes, should definitely watch it again before we go. Will be sure to check out that Inn right away :D Do you know if it has a website?

We're not going to stay more than a night or two in Charleston or Savannah because we want to spend lots of nights in Disney.
Decisions, decisions!!!

Shell, would love to have a link to that forum, please? Thank you!

:flower:

P.S. And hoping to meet some Tags along our road trip - who's in GA, NC, SC?? :D

Thanks for the replies folks : )

I'm looking at Peninsula Grill or High Cotton for Tramp's 55th Birthday Dinner - also HC has a jazz brunch and Tramp said he'd prefer the brunch - so we'll see - we will do the usual tours and such in town - Ft. Sumter - Yorktown - lighthouse - hitting the beach and the creek - heard about a little out of the way spot for good eats.

We were thinking of renting a yacht - it's beautiful four bedrooms - four baths - really pretty but we've decided on something else just as wonderful ;) When we do Hilton Head and Beaufort, SC we'll do the yacht then  Can't wait to do Savannah - after that I've done the entire East Coast :)

I'll pm you some information - those who asked.

Here's a link to the Charleston Newspaper

http://www.charleston.net/default.aspx

For a feel of what to expect - know the town you are going to - see the crime rate - find a good restaurant - get the demographics of an area or find out if there is a mosquito problelm head to the local newspaper - any town you're heading to - it's a great start and a wealth of information : )
