Doing my volunteer driving for the Funai Classic Golf Tournament at WDW, I've had the opportunity to chat with some of the folks at the various resorts. Some of what I learned might be useful for everyone's vacation planning so I thought I'd share...

(1) The guys who greet you when you pull up to a deluxe resort and take the bags from your car are apparently known as greeters. This is not considered a tipped position and the CM's pay is set accordingly.

(2) The guys who bring your bags from baggage storage to your room are Bell Services. This job is considered a tipped position and the hourly rate of pay is only about $3. When you have CMs take care of your bags, these guys are the ones who you should take care of.

(3) Valets are also paid as a tipped position and therefore should be tipped appropriately when used. They do not get any of the $6 that is charged for valet parking.

Hope this helps some folks around here...

Thanks for the information, Pam. My DH always tips the greeter, who knew? Did you get to drive anyone famous? Sounds like a fun thing to do.

That is interesting about the greeters...

I'm confused though, because I've had them unload my car and then drive it away to valet parking. (This has been the case at GF, YC, BC, AKL and WL) How are we supposed to know the difference? I tend to tip whomever is helpful - but it does seem like double dipping to pay someone to take bags out of the car AND have them delivered to the room. I just don't wish to stiff the a guy/gal making $3 bucks an hour!

Im so confused too. My first trip to WDW was to the COntemporary. They guy told me he would take our bags and take care of them. Hes the one who greeted us then took the luggage out of our car. I cant remmebr his word sbut he was strongly hinting at he was th one we tip. We did too - we had 15 bags and tipped a dollar per bag. I remmeebr reading to tip a dollar per bag.

We then felt weird because hours later when our bags showed up we didnt know how much to tip again. We felt $30 was too much for storing and bringing us our bags. We gave that guy $5. Now Im worried I did it really backwards. This was back in 1998.

I too am confused about the Greeter. In my 3 or 4 stays at Deluxe Resorts the person who greeted me & took my bags was also one who Valet Parked cars. Question on Valet is their hourly pay $3.00 also?

Hmmmm....now I'm confused...I was just conveying what the guys at ASSports told me. I think maybe a small tip (valet sized) for the guy who unloads and drives the car away and then the "standard" $1/bag tip for the guy who brings the bags up? I'll have to ask more questions next time I have the chance.

As far as driving anyone famous, I didn't get any Pros, but my friend did drive Freddy Couples yesterday. I had several very wealthy folks though - one guy has been playing in the Pro-Am for 15 years!!! Trust me, that costs a bundle!!!

Would it be rude to just ask the person taking the bags from the car if they will be delivering them also? My trip is getting so close I'm starting to stress over all the little things :?

I have a question too regarding tipping. As the date gets closer, my money is getting in shorter supply. I have some Disney Dollars bought so far which I planned to use for souvenirs or snacks etc.

Would it be appropriate to tip with Disney Dollars or is it more appropriate to use hard cold cash?

I am not an expert by any means but I would think they would prefer hard cold cash.......When leaving work if they have to stop for milk or want to get flowers for the wife they might be very happy to be able to shop off premesis........Even those who love their job might like to be free from Disney when their shift is over........

Thank you for the advice about tipping!!! I'm always so worried about tipping enough. We always tip the guy who brings us our luggage and of course our towncar service but I don't think I've tipped the greeter.
Too many people to worry about!!!!!

Wow, Thanks for bringing this up Pam.. I'm gonna ask some questions, the next time I'm there. For those who are going soon, I wouldn't stress over it, I'd call the resort direct. The last time, I split the tip at the Dolphin and that wasn't right cause that first guy, I now know, was a greeter. I just wish they'd get rid of this whole business and charge me for the service.

How much is appropriate to tip the towncar driver bringing you to and from the airport? Do you tip on arrival at WDW, upon return to MCO, or half each time? I always worry about tipping correctly!! :?:

If I'm ever confused about tipping, I don't. Instead I ask if it's OK for me to buy a Mickeyhead icecream with the money I was going to tip. :nahnah: Works everytime--Boy, I sure eat a lot of icecream!!!!!!!! :eat:

I think this is the problem here. Those ASSports were messing with you, Pam! Never trust them... LOL

Would everyone agree $15 roundtrip for the towncar driver would be appropriate????? I know we've discussed this before, but I forget!!!!! Ronski, that's a great way to get lots of ice cream but I'd feel too guilty not tipping them!!!! I would enjoy that ice cream though!!!!!

Wanda I always pay the tip each way just in case I get a different driver. I have paid $8.00 or $10.00 to each Driver. You might want to post this question in the Transportation Forum also.

WandaYou know, it's funny you should say that. Everywhere I go (I go lots of places--really), people ask me, "Ronski don't you EVER feel guilty of depriving someone of much needed and just compensation?" Typically, I must finish eating my icecream before I discuss the relative lack of compassion which drives me. At length, I attempt to respond in a non-condescending manner to that question which so many have posed. "Nope" I say, "Want some icecream?"
